Friend,
Our country is at its best when it welcomes all people with dignity and compassion, and that’s exactly what we’ve seen in San Diego, California recently.
A coalition of organizations, led by Haitian Bridge Alliance (HBA), has gone to extraordinary lengths to welcome thousands of people seeking asylum in the past few weeks — people that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) dropped off at the Iris Transit Center in San Diego with zero notice.
As one of only two Black-led organizations working along the U.S.-Mexico border, our partners at HBA play a critical role in offering support to everyone arriving, including African migrants who take long and perilous journeys, often arriving with very little while facing uncertain futures. Just a few months ago, I joined a delegation at the border led by HBA and witnessed first-hand their courageous and effective advocacy.
This coalition works tirelessly to provide aid, assistance, and hope to those who need it most — but they need the people power and resources to maintain that support.
That’s why I’m asking you, friend, to consider making a contribution to these four remarkable organizations welcoming and assisting asylum seekers in San Diego.

Haitian Bridge Alliance: Provides immigrants with humanitarian, legal, and social services, with a particular focus on Black people, the Haitian community, women and girls, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and survivors of torture and other human rights abuses.
Casa Familiar: A welcome center in San Ysidro that provides over 40 bilingual programs and services at six different sites in the community.
Immigrant Defenders: Works with San Diego-based partner organizations to ensure that asylum seekers are welcomed with respect and dignity.
Al Otro Lado: Leads efforts on the ground in San Diego to document cases of family separations.
Each of these organizations are proof that it is not only possible but essential to support those seeking refuge in this country.
We’re deeply grateful to have people like you, friend, help us support this cause and demonstrate our commitment to ensuring that we welcome all people with dignity.
In solidarity,
Kica Matos
