The Quarterly Highlights is a snapshot of Solidarity Center programs and organizational activities. The Solidarity Center works around the globe helping workers build collective voice and more just societies through organizing and advocacy.

** M-POWER SUMMIT: PROGRAM TO END VIOLENCE, HARASSMENT CHANGES DYNAMIC IN LESOTHO
------------------------------------------------------------
Attendees of a high-level summit ([link removed]) learned that an unprecedented, binding, worker-centered program designed to comprehensively address rampant gender-based violence and harassment in several garment factories in Lesotho is succeeding in creating a safe and dignified workplace in Lesotho. The summit ([link removed]) , convened by Multilateral Partnership for Organizing, Worker Empowerment and Rights (M-POWER), brought together government, labor and business leaders to highlight advances toward the goal of eradicating gender-based violence and harassment. It was co-hosted by the Lesotho Federation of Trade Unions and Lesotho Labor Council, and supported by the Solidarity Center.

The last decade has been stark for working people across the globe. We hope the U.S-Brazil Partnership for Workers’ Rights ([link removed]) is just the beginning of government commitments to put worker rights front and center, not just in Brazil and the United States, but around the world.

** ‘THE WEIGHT OF THE HEAT’: CLIMATE CHANGE AND BANGLADESH TEA WORKERS

Tea estate workers in Bangladesh ([link removed]) say the job is more onerous now due to increased heat and more torrential rains. The changing climate also means that picking the daily quota of tea leaves, always difficult, is sometimes impossible. And when they cannot meet their quota, they see their meager wages further diminished.

In Bangladesh, 80 percent of women garment workers surveyed said they had experienced or witnessed sexual harassment, molestation or assault, endured extreme verbal abuse or witnessed a factory manager or supervisor abuse and harass other women in the factory. To better understand the experiences of women in the garment industry with GBVH and elevate their voices in advocacy campaigns, the Solidarity Center partnered with six trade union federations and three civil society organizations to conduct participatory action research ([link removed]) .

In 2021, the ILO estimated that 169 million people were international migrant workers, with an increasing number of young people migrating for jobs. Migrant workers are among the most marginalized and often are excluded from labor law coverage, including limitations or exclusions from the right to associate or to collectively bargain. This issue of the Global Labour Rights Reporter ([link removed]) , published by the ILAW Network, a Solidarity Center project, focuses on protecting the rights of migrant workers and refugees.

The ILAW Network's issue brief, Fighting for Lives and Livelihoods: Workers, the Pandemic and the Law ([link removed]) , includes analysis on how workers fought for their life and livelihood during the COVID-19 pandemic by using the law to their advantage. It is accompanied by 11 country-specific case studies that detail wins by workers during the pandemic.
