Governor Greg Abbott Declares White Cane Day October 15, 2023

In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed White Cane Safety Day as a national observance to celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired and to recognize the white cane which serves as a tool for independence. Ever since, Texas has been proud to recognize White Cane Day as an opportunity to celebrate the many ways those who are blind or visually impaired make our state a better place to live.

Governor Greg Abbott issued a proclamation declaring October 15th to be White Cane Day in Texas. Governor Abbott said, ?Each year, a day in October is designated as White Cane Safety Day to raise awareness of people who are blind or visually impaired. Their independent spirit and resilience represent the best of Texas, and their contributions to their communities are equally noteworthy.? While many Texans with visual impairments or blindness also utilize service animals, the white cane has long been a visual symbol that increases mobility. Although there have been many advances in this cause, there is still much to be done to create a society that fully includes those with visual impairments and blindness. To create a more inclusive state for all, Governor Abbott encourages all Texans to learn more about blindness and visual impairment and how these challenges do not define Texans. As we strive to bring about a better, brighter future, all Texans will have a role to play?regardless of their ability status.

A White Cane Day celebration will be held on October 18th in Austin on the Campus of the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired. For more information on our state?s recognition of White Cane Day visit www.whitecaneday.org.
