Dear Friend,
The western province of Herat in Afghanistan was struck by a 6.3-magnitude earthquake on the morning of October 15—the third in the region since October 7. Herat Regional Hospital, which Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) supports, received an additional 100 patients after the most recent earthquake.
These powerful earthquakes triggered landslides, destroyed homes, disrupted vital infrastructure, and left thousands needing urgent assistance. So far, the earthquakes and aftershocks have reportedly resulted in over 2,445 deaths and injured thousands more.
MSF has been working around the clock to provide care to those affected by this disaster. Our teams were already on the ground, treating patients after the first two earthquakes struck on October 7 and October 11. We have set up five medical tents providing operational, first aid, and logistical support to the people and areas most impacted by these powerful quakes. As of last week, over 540 patients had been treated at MSF-supported Herat Regional Hospital.
We expect these numbers to continue to climb in the coming days and weeks as we assess the escalating situation.
Following the first two devastating earthquakes, the people of Herat were already anxious. Many had been forced to sleep outside, in their cars, or in tents either because their homes had been destroyed or they did not want to stay inside. Unfortunately, this latest earthquake has only heightened their anxiety and the uncertainty of their situation.
MSF has been working on a range of projects in Afghanistan, responding to the immense medical needs caused by decades of conflict and political upheaval, particularly among women and children. In Herat, MSF supports Herat Regional Hospital’s pediatric department’s triage, emergency room, intensive care unit, inpatient therapeutic feeding center, and hospitalization ward.
When a crisis strikes in Afghanistan or Haiti or Ukraine, support from people like you enables us to respond quickly and pivot existing programs to save lives.
