Jack, last month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Native American Child Protection Act (NACPA) by an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote of 378-32!
The bill re-approves programs and provides more funding for initiatives originally established in 1990 as part of then-Senator John McCain's Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, equipping Native American communities with resources to better address child abuse and neglect. The legislation now heads to the U.S. Senate.

NACPA was introduced by Daily Kos-endorsed Rep. Ruben Gallego (AZ-03), who highlighted the importance of culturally-responsive solutions to abuse, saying:
"A lot of what we know about child abuse is very much from the perspective of Anglo families, and that doesn't necessarily work in Indian Country. I know as a Latino family we're a little different too," Gallego said. "We have to adapt to them to make sure that we have best practices and they're culturally competent. And the way to do that is to actually have some real research on how to do that and work with tribal governments to develop those programs."
NACPA aims to empower Native and Indigenous communities with the tools to prevent, provide treatment to victims, investigate, and prosecute instances of family violence, child abuse, and child neglect involving Native children and families. It prioritizes funding for prevention services to avert trauma before it happens, and reauthorizes three grant programs that provide funding for critical services in American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
