Dear  John,

On November 15, the University Bookman and friends will hold a memorial lecture in honor of Gerald Russello, a longtime editor of the University Bookman, in New York. Dr. Dermot Quinn, Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at Seton Hall University, will speak on “Gerald Russello and the Art of Memory.” Dr. Quinn and Gerald served together on the board of the G. K. Chesterton Institute for Faith and Culture, sharing a love of all things Chestertonian.

The event will be held at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus in Manhattan, beginning with a reception at 6:00 p.m.  Please join the University Bookman editors, reviewers, and readers by registering here or by contacting [email protected]. The Kirk Center is grateful for Gerald’s life, work, and legacy and looks forward to carrying on his memory and dedication to the Permanent Things.

The Bookman is now sending the weekly book reviews via email to subscribers each Friday. This has been very well received—we’ve heard that it’s just enough to keep you informed but not too much to be annoying. If you do not currently receive these Friday emails, you may sign up on this page by checking the box “reviews and essays from the University Bookman, delivered to your inbox.”

In other book-related news, a new edition of Russell Kirk’s The Politics of Prudence has just been published by Regnery. Michael Federici, a Kirk Center Senior Fellow, writes in his introduction to this edition:

“The appearance of a new edition of Russell Kirk’s The Politics of Prudence is an indication that it remains relevant to current conservatives. In fact, the state of American politics suggests that conservatives would do well to heed Kirk’s wisdom and warnings about American culture and politics. Since the original publication of the book…the conservative identity crisis that engendered The Politics of Prudence has deepened. Recalling to memory the meaning of conservatism is a first step in the recovery of prudent political conservatism.”

In this collection, Kirk calls the rising generation to the defense of order—both the moral order and the social order, the order of the soul and the order of society—against the enemies of justice, freedom, and a high culture.

We do indeed stand “on the shoulders of giants.”
