Poynter's Al Tompkins calls it "arguably the world’s most complex conflict." ([link removed])
Our senior vice president and media ethics expert Kelly McBride wrote ([link removed]) that newsrooms must "find ways to document the full range of views of the people in their communities" while creating "an environment ... where journalists can openly discuss and explore their personal competing loyalties."
And faculty member Fernanda Camarena spoke to veteran standards editors ([link removed]) to talk through "the tough decisions on what to air and publish during a war."
As the world's attention was drawn to Israel and Gaza, Poynter sought to make sense of media coverage and misinformation for news consumers, while also providing for journalists best practices and reliable conflict background.
Our stories included:
* How to avoid misinformation about the war in Gaza ([link removed])
* When journalists find demonstrators’ views personally offensive ([link removed])
* Amid images and news of actual war, false and misleading claims about Israel-Hamas thrive ([link removed])
* How standards editors are sorting through graphic images from Israel and Gaza ([link removed])
* The basics on Israel, Gaza, Palestine and Hamas for local journalists ([link removed])
* Journalists, nonstop coverage of war and violence affects your mental health ([link removed])

As Tompkins reminds us ([link removed]) , "Put your oxygen mask on. Your readers, viewers and listeners need you."

How to Improve Your Coverage of LGBTQ+ Communities
Online resources
As the Trans Legislation Tracker ([link removed]) and the ACLU ([link removed]) note, the United States is experiencing a surge in anti-trans legislation in 2023. Journalists can tell nuanced, informed stories about transgender and gender non-conforming people using resources from Poynter.
Thanks to a grant from the Gill Foundation, our Poynter newsroom is covering LGBTQ+ issues, like "Trans and gender-fluid kids are under attack. How can we tell their stories without furthering harm?" ([link removed]) by Nora Neus. We also recommend "Trans in Sport," ([link removed]) a recent webinar designed to help journalists thoughtfully, accurately and ethically report stories about gender and sports on the local level.
Cost: Free.

How Any Journalist Can Earn Trust
Self-directed course, start any time
We have to stop assuming people understand the mission, ethics and processes behind our work in journalism. We can’t let ourselves get lumped in with perceptions of “the media.” Instead, we need to actively work to earn trust from our communities by telling them why we’re worthy of their time, trust and support.
This online, self-directed course, developed in partnership with our friends at Trusting News, ([link removed]) will help you understand mistrust and gain a better understanding of what trust in news looks like around the world. Examples and activities are designed for non-U.S. news media and fact-checking organizations, in collaboration with Poynter’s International Fact-Checking Network. If you are based in the U.S., check out this version ([link removed]) instead.
Cost: Free.
