The day I announced my run for Senate, I was tired.

I was tired because I hadn’t slept much. The day before, Sen. Bob Menendez was indicted; charged with accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes, including gold bars. The allegations are stunning and alarming.

When I first read the indictment, I thought the accusations were incredibly serious and the evidence so alarming and egregious that I just didn’t see how Senator Menendez could continue to represent people in New Jersey’s best interests and so I called for his resignation.

Later that day, he doubled down, insisting, “I’m not going anywhere.”

“I’m not going anywhere.”

That defiance and phrase really struck me because it felt like he believed he owned that United States Senate seat.

John, ending government corruption, has been one of the core values of my career in Congress. It’s a cornerstone of this movement we’ve built together.

I thought about the work we’ve done together and what we’re fighting for.

I thought about Senator Menendez’s actions and how they undermine our work.

And I thought, he doesn’t own this Senate seat. It belongs to the people of New Jersey.

After dinner, I sat down with my wife Kammy, and we talked about this moment. We talked about what this would mean for our family.

On Saturday morning, I called my team together and asked for their perspective. We talked about what that would mean. How this could very well be my last election ever. How, win or lose, if we decided to do this, we’d never run again for re-election in the House.

If there was ever a moment to step up and fight for our values, this was it. So Saturday afternoon, I decided that people living in New Jersey deserved a choice.

Now I’m coming to you, John. For the last few years, we’ve been fighting to build a government that answers to people.

We’ve been fighting for a better way to govern – one rooted in respect, integrity, and a commitment to service.

We’ve been fighting to restore decency in Washington and people’s trust in government.

This is our moment. We didn’t ask for it. We didn’t expect it. But I believe with every fiber of my being that we must seize it. Together, we can give New Jerseyans the trustworthy, hardworking representation they deserve. Together, we can bring integrity back to this Senate seat.
