The report disclosed a record-breaking 11,643 hate crime incidents in 2022. friend, The FBI released its 2022 Hate Crime Statistics Act report today, and the numbers are disturbing. The report disclosed a record-breaking 11,643 hate crime incidents in 2022, with a substantial number targeting Black people and a historic rise in anti-Hispanic hate crimes. Meanwhile, participation in crime reporting among law enforcement agencies decreased, with only 14,660 of over 18,800 agencies actively contributing, marking the fifth consecutive year of declining participation. This trend underscores an urgent need for strengthened law enforcement commitment and comprehensive legislative action to effectively combat the escalating level of hate crimes. That’s why the SPLC is once again calling for Congress to take action to expand prevention efforts and make hate crime reporting mandatory by law enforcement agencies across the country. The lack of accurate and comprehensive national data on hate crime incidents greatly hinders our ability, as a nation, to address the root causes, design prevention strategies and provide the needed support to victims and communities. We promise to continue our groundbreaking work to prevent hate and extremist violence, but we cannot adequately address the devastating rise in hate crimes without accurate information about the scope of the problem. Our calls for mandatory hate crime reporting legislation are echoed by a broad coalition of civil rights and religious groups, and we will keep up the pressure until hate crime victims see the justice they deserve. Please make a special gift today to ensure the SPLC can continue to fight for those harmed by hate, violence and white supremacy. With gratitude, The Southern Poverty Law Center
