I‘m not giving up the fight for broad-based student debt cancellation.
This month, millions of people are making their first student loan payment in over three years. And we have Republicans to blame for resuming payments.
I am not letting up on this fight for a minute because broad-based student debt cancellation is essential. The student debt crisis is an economic justice issue, a gender justice issue, and a crisis for Black America.
While I’m encouraged by President Biden’s recent action to cancel $9 billion in student loan debt, it needs to go further. We need to fight for tuition-free college and invest in higher education as the public good that it is. And we need to keep the pressure on the Biden-Harris Administration to make good on their promise of broad-based student debt cancellation and deliver sorely needed financial relief to millions of people.
I know it is gutting to be a borrower sitting on hold with a loan servicer right now as you try to figure out your options. As payments resume, many folks are understandably in a panic. That’s why I’m sharing some tools that are available now to help borrowers navigate their options:
- Saving on A Valuable Education (SAVE) program: this new program under the Department of Education could cap the interest on your loans and reduce your monthly payments depending on your income.
- Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program: this program is for people who work in public service in federal, state, tribal, or local government, or for a non-profit organization.
- Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) programs: there are four types of income-driven repayment plans that you may be eligible for, and you can figure out which of these plans is best for you by using this loan simulator.
- There is a 12-Month On-Ramp Period: while payments resumed on October 1st, there is a temporary on-ramp period through Sept. 30, 2024, which protects borrowers from having a missed payment or delinquency reported to credit reporting agencies.
- All of these resources, and more, are available at StudentAid.gov.
If you are impacted by the student debt crisis, I want to hear from you. Please fill out this form here to tell me your story and share what student debt cancellation would mean for you.
I know that student debt cancellation can change and save lives, and I’m not letting up for a minute.
Yours in service,
Ayanna
