As 17 October marks the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP), the Global Coalition to End Child Poverty, co-chaired by UNICEF and Save the Children, calls on Governments, businesses and the International Community to:
- Expand access to inclusive social protection, including child benefits and programmes which are shock responsive to be rapidly scaled up during conflicts and crisis.
- Promote inclusive childcare and parental support systems, including paid parental leave and accessible and quality childcare.
- Promote a decent work agenda, including ensuring every worker has access to social protection and adequate living wages, and young people receive relevant education and training opportunities.
Join us for the launch of the call to action on 17 October, at 09:00 AM (EDT).
Let’s not forget that:
- 333 million children living in extreme poverty, struggling to survive on less than $2.15 per day and 829 million children subsisting on less than $3.65 a day.
- We witnessed three lost years of child poverty reduction due to COVID-19.
- At current rates of reduction, alongside ever-increasing conflicts and catastrophic impacts of climate change, the SDG goal of ending extreme child poverty by 2030 will not be met.
The urgency to address child poverty is clear. Ending child poverty is a policy choice.
