What a great Rider First Awards!

Thanks for joining our celebration at our Rider First Awards! We truly could not have achieved such a great Transit Month without everyone who participated in any of our 42 events, our Ride Contest, and, of course, the people who make public transit in the Bay Area special. We hope you had a great night, and we're already looking forward to next year's Transit Month!

Show your support for the J Church Safety and Accessibility Project TOMORROW, October 17 at City Hall

At the SFMTA Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, October 17, the SFMTA will present a proposal that aims to help improve safety for people walking and driving, and increase accessibility at Muni stops along the J Church on San Jose Avenue from Ocean Avenue to Cotter Street in the Mission Terrace neighborhood.

This proposal includes improvements such as transit lanes, widening boarding islands, daylighting, wheelchair-accessible transit stops, rapid flashing beacons, and pedestrian bulbs to shorten crossing distances. All of which will help improve transit and safety for people walking in the neighborhood.

To voice your support, attend the meeting at City Hall, call in, or email your comments to [email protected].

Ensure that Transit Capital Investment grants and Thriving Communities programs are maintained!

Despite the high demand from communities, the FY2024 T-HUD Senate bill has zeroed out the Thriving Communities Program.

The Thriving Communities Program is an initiative to help disadvantaged, rural, and Tribal areas develop and deliver transformational community revitalization projects. No one knows their communities’ needs better than those who live there, yet too often, small and disadvantaged communities lack the technical expertise and capacity to effectively compete for federal grants. Through the Thriving Communities Program, local areas receive intensive technical assistance to help them plan and develop a comprehensive pipeline of transportation and community revitalization projects. By participating in this program, these communities are empowered to utilize the historic funding provided under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to deliver infrastructure projects that meet their economic and community goals.

We are alarmed by certain proposed amendments to the Thriving Communities Act, as they
could undermine its effectiveness and equity.

Please call your US representative and urge them not to approve harmful sections of the upcoming funding bill.

Talking points:

I am calling to urge you to stop measures being proposed in the House FY24 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development funding bill that would negatively impact communities across our state including:

  • Section 192 and related amendments in the House T-HUD appropriations bill that, if enacted, prohibits the US Department of Transportation from considering equity in federal grantmaking.

  • Section 126 and related amendments in the House T-HUD appropriations bill that, if enacted, prohibits the Department of Transportation from implementing a rule that would require state departments of transportation to measure greenhouse gas emissions and establish targets to lower those emissions.

Sections 192 and 126 of the House Transportation, Housing and Urban Development funding bill are blatantly in opposition to the future that we are fighting for in California, where everybody has equal access to mobility, no matter their background.

These sections also make it harder to make the progress we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and slow down the very real threat of climate change.

Please do not approve the T-HUD funding bill until these two harmful sections are removed.

Do you depend on BART to get to and from work?

KPIX and CBS News Bay Area is looking to interview a rider who depends on BART to get to and from work as their primary mode of transportation. This interview will be part of a larger story, imagining what the Bay Area would look like without BART. If this sounds like you, and would like to participate in this interview, contact [email protected]. Interviews will be held Monday, Oct 23 or Tuesday, Oct 24.
