"If you use the term 'this is an invasion,' that's not anti-Hispanic. It's a fact."
-- Fox News pundit on 8/6/19
John —
The El Paso shooter’s manifesto made clear that he was motivated to kill because of a racist and xenophobic illusion that our country is “being invaded.”
That illusion was not only propagated with Trump’s rhetoric, but the Trump campaign spent untold amounts of money to spread it on Facebook ads to millions of Americans too. Trump’s divide-and-conquer politics helped inspire the hate that got these people killed.
Trump didn’t do this alone. Fox News has always been at his side, ready to defend his reckless rhetoric. Fox and Friends hosts jumped to defend calling the human rights crisis at the border “an invasion,” despite the fact that the shooter used those exact words to justify his horror.
For months, Fox News has been an accomplice to Trump’s xenophobia — from stoking fear about an incoming “migrant caravan” to giving him cover for the abuses of ICE and CBP. They broadcast white nationalist talking points all day and night.
We need members of Congress who are willing to take powerful and bold stands against the forces of hatred with a positive vision for our country that belongs to all its people, not just a few.
In solidarity,
