Friend,
As we let you know earlier this year, Maria McFarland Sánchez-Moreno is stepping down and this is her last week as DPA’s Executive Director. On behalf of the board and staff, I want to thank Maria for her invaluable contributions. We have been lucky to benefit from her strong leadership for over two years, achieving major wins, refining our strategic priorities, and leaving us well-positioned to seize even more opportunities in the future.
I am also thrilled to share with you that we have appointed our very own Kassandra Frederique to be DPA’s next Executive Director. We could not be more excited that a leader with Kassandra’s strategic vision, integrity, and passion will take the reins at DPA.
By any measure, Kassandra is a force to reckon with – she has significantly influenced drug policy reform in New York, and has helped to shape the national drug policy conversation.
She has been an architect of innovative campaigns to expand the debate around the impacts of policing, the importance of legalizing marijuana with social and racial justice at the forefront and the breadth of the overdose crisis within communities of color. She has mobilized cities to rethink their approach to drug policy from the ground up, and helped bring the dialogue around safer consumption spaces to the national level with her strategic organizing and partner development.
Kassandra started her career at DPA as an intern in the New York Policy team almost ten years ago. With her insight and creativity as an advocate, her ability to connect with those most affected by the war on drugs, and her inspiring leadership style, she has progressed through a series of increasingly responsible roles in the organization.
She is currently a member of the senior leadership team as Managing Director of Policy Advocacy and Campaigns and will assume the role of Executive Director in September. Until then, DPA Interim Director Richard Burns, the senior management team, and board will work together to lay the groundwork for a smooth transition.
We are excited for Kassandra to lead DPA with her brilliance and bold vision and work with you to end the war on drugs and replace it with policies grounded in science, compassion, health and human rights.
Sincerely,
Derek Hodel
President, Board of Directors
