Jack, Daily Kos used to be more like other news outlets, with advertising covering all our budgetary needs. Those days are long gone.

Over the past decade, the ways in which news outlets make money have changed drastically. A lot of outlets haven't been able to adapt, and have had to make steep cuts or shut down operations entirely. In the past few years, the main problem has been that the big tech companies like Amazon, Facebook and Google have completely taken over online advertising. Last year, more than two-thirds of all online ad revenue went to Big Tech, which are already some of the biggest corporations on the planet.

Daily Kos has survived for as long as it has because we diversified our revenue streams. Unlike other outlets, more than half our income comes from readers like you, each chipping in a few bucks at a time to keep our work online and free from paywalls. That's why I'm writing to you today.

Daily Kos relies on small donations to make ends meet. The most impactful thing you can do to help keep us online is to set up a small monthly recurring donation, which would allow us to see what we can expect months in advance and help us budget accordingly. Please click here to start a $5 monthly recurring donation now.

If you can't donate monthly or if you already have a monthly recurring donation set up, please click here to give $5 one time.

Thank you,
Michael Langenmayr, Daily Kos
