AB 659 HPV Bill was Signed into Law by Governor Newsom
But Thanks to Lobbying Efforts, it remains a restatement of the ACIP Guidelines and NOT a School/College Vaccine Mandate!
Bill Update: While Governor Newsom signed AB 659 into law this weekend, CA residents should see this bill as a HUGE win for Health Rights in California. A Voice for Choice Advocacy, along our Convention on Health Rights (COHR) allies, worked hard to get AB 659 amended throughout this CA legislative session. AB 659 started as an HPV vaccine mandate for schools and then colleges, and was amended to state it was "expected" that school and college students would get the HPV vaccine before enrolling. Towards the end of the legislative session it was further amended to advise 6th graders and their parents, as well as college/university enrollees that the HPV vaccine is recommended by the CDC and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. Students will not be prevented from attendance at schools, colleges or universities in California if they are not vaccinated for HPV. These institutions are also not required to check HPV vaccination status.
These amendments that came as a results of AVFCA's efforts, as well as our partnership with COHR organizations. AVFCA worked closely with Asm Aguiar-Curry's office and specifically her chief of staff, who was always open to communication and discussion. Our relationships with other key legislative and governmental offices allowed AVFCA to have critical conversations to take this bill from a really BAD bill to a bill that CA could live with, knowing it was not going away completely. This bill highlights how Voice for Choice Advocacy has established itself as the leading legislative organization lobbying in the California Capitol for your health rights.
