The Supreme Court is facing a legitimacy crisis, and there is something we can do about it. Or, more accurately, some things.

We have to urge Congress to pass ethics reform for the Court that would put in place an enforceable code of conduct for the justices. We have to push for an inspector general for the judiciary, so investigative reporters aren’t the ones with full responsibility for investigating the judges’ and justices’ potential conflicts of interest.

And we have to work toward a Court that better reflects the American people. That’s why I joined Representative Hank Johnson and other anti-corruption leaders to endorse the TERM Act, which would require justices to serve in staggered 18-year terms.

Noah at a TERM Act rally [[link removed]]In recent years, it has become increasingly clear that Supreme Court justices lack accountability in part because of their lifetime appointments. They’re violating ethical norms and refusing to hold themselves to the same standard that federal judges, and most regular Americans, are held to.

This is creating a lack of trust in the Court.

In fact, public confidence in the Supreme Court is at the lowest level since polling began 50 years ago. For an institution whose credibility is its currency, this is a historic crisis.

By requiring that justices serve in staggered 18-year terms, with senior justices who can fill in as needed, the TERM Act would ensure that the Court more closely resembles the country it serves and would make it easier for justices to avoid conflicts of interest that undermine their credibility.

John, voters overwhelmingly support reforms for the Supreme Court. It’s time for Congress to pass the TERM Act.
