In the months leading up to today, the idea of Big Government as the solution to virtually every problem has become more prevalent.

In the months leading up to today, the idea of Big Government as the solution to virtually every problem has become more prevalent. Bernie Sanders, for example, has a long record of foolishly romanticizing and pushing for socialism. As many voters go to the polls today, it is important to look past the political rhetoric and power-mongering propaganda.
“Bernie Sanders has put socialism explicitly on America’s public agenda. He wants a much more socialist America than what we see in capitalist Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. Despite more than two dozen efforts historically to put a democratic socialism into effect, it always results in tyranny and economic failure.”
—Williamson M. Evers, Senior Fellow, Independent Institute

In 2016, Senior Fellow and Director of our Center on Entrepreneurial Innovation, Dr. Lawrence J. McQuillian wrote “Why Bernie Sanders Is (Still) Morally Unfit to Be President,” ([link removed]) and the article is more timely today than ever!

And in our work to combat the fallacies of and harms from Big Government, Dr. Evers has also recently curated the “Best Books on the Folly of Socialism,” ([link removed]) which has since been shared more than six thousand times and recommended by Ben Shapiro, Amity Shlaes, Alan Reynolds, Linda Chavez, Véronique de Rugy, David Harsanyi, Stephanie Slade, and many others, including such groups as the following:
* Atlas Network
* Intercollegiate Studies Institute
* National Review Institute
* O’Neil Center for Global Markets and Freedom, Southern Methodist University
* State Policy Network
* Young Americans for Liberty

“This is the best list of what to read about socialism that’s out there,” says Dr. Evers.

David J. Theroux ([link removed]) , President of the Independent Institute, concurs. “This critical bibliography can provide badly needed balance. By setting the record straight, these authors show readers that any skepticism about socialism they harbor is warranted. As they explain, the problem with socialism goes far beyond its practical ineffectiveness: its theoretical basis is morally deformed and leads inevitably to massive injustice and abuse.”

Especially now during this critical election year, we invite you to share our “Best Books” ([link removed]) guide on the cruel delusions of command-and-control government with family, friends and colleagues and protect the culture and institutions of liberty, opportunity and human flourishing.

The Roots of Government Failure
Traditional public policy and welfare economics have held that “market failures”—the presumed inability of a free market to deliver certain goods and services deemed to be in the public interest—are common and require government intervention to protect the public good. But is this actually the case? Offering a powerful perspective on market processes, property rights, politics, and government bureaucracy, our award-winning book Beyond Politics is an irreplaceable examination of the foundations of a free and humane society.

“The best primer on political reality, Beyond Politics will revolutionize your thinking!”
—Pete DuPont, former Governor of Delaware

“Beyond Politics is a superb, thought-provoking and penetrating book, analyzing the real, as opposed to the presumed, effects of government regulation. This outstanding book deserves to be read by all serious students of government policy.”
—Sam Peltzman, Ralph and Dorothy Keller Distinguished Service Professor of Economics Emeritus, University of Chicago

“Throughout the world, publics are looking for a new conception of government and its role. Happily, there is a whole new theory that fills the bill called ‘public choice,’ and which is clearly and persuasively presented in the excellent book, Beyond Politics.”
—Robert L. Bartley, Pulitzer Prize winner and former Editor of The Wall Street Journal
