A police chase in Los Angeles ended with a pickup truck crashing into a fire hydrant, leaving a huge mess in the Shadow Hills neighborhood. The Los Angeles Police Department had chased the suspect driving a pickup truck Friday evening. After crashing the pickup truck and causing the fire hydrant to burst, the suspect ran from the soggy scene on foot. The suspect was eventually tackled and chased down by a group of officers at someone's backyard and was placed in handcuffs. At one point during the chase, one of the officers injured their back. It is unknown how the officer got hurt. Officials did not specify what the suspect was initially wanted for.

Woman Shoots Man Trying To Get Into Her Hollywood Hills Home

A man who was trying to get into a Hollywood Hills home is in critical condition after being shot Sunday night by a woman who was home at the time. The incident was reported shortly before 9:30 p.m. in the 2800 block of Hollyridge Drive. A preliminary investigation revealed that a man in his 30s was pushing on the back door of the home to get in, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed. He was apparently asking to be let in, saying he was hurt and in need of help. A woman inside the home feared for her safety and got a gun, police said. She then apparently asked the man to leave but he refused and she opened fire when he allegedly reached into his pocket. The unidentified man was conscious and breathing when first responders arrived. He was transported to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition, authorities said. It was unclear if any arrests were made in the incident.

Los Angeles Police Shoot Knife-Wielding Man Downtown, Authorities Say

Los Angeles police shot a knife-wielding man early Saturday in downtown Los Angeles after he allegedly charged at an officer, authorities said. Officers were patrolling in the area of Broadway and 7th Street around 1:30 a.m., when they were flagged down by a community member, directing them to a man with a knife, the Los Angeles Police Department said on X, formerly known as Twitter. Officers made contact with the suspects and attempted to gain his compliance, police said. The suspect ignored their commands and continued east on Broadway to 6th Street. During a confrontation, police fired 40 mm foam rounds that are intended to incapacitate a suspect. The man then charged an officer with a knife in his hand and police shot him, police said. The adult male suspect was taken to the hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics and is listed in critical but stable condition, police said. No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident. Footage shared to the Citizen app appeared to show officers providing first aid to the man, who was lying in the middle of the street, KTLA-TV Channel 5 reported.

Man And Woman Wounded In Westlake Shooting

A 22-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman were wounded during a shooting in the Westlake area of Los Angeles, authorities said Monday. The shooting occurred about 9:50 p.m. Sunday outside 719 S. Alvarado St., according to Officer D. Licea of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Operations Center. The man was chased by three males and one fired “numerous rounds” at him, Licea said. The victim was struck by at least one bullet. Relatives took him to a hospital where he had stable vital signs. Meanwhile an innocent bystander, the woman, was also struck by gunfire, the officer said. Paramedics took her to a hospital where her vital signs were stable. The suspects left the scene.

Man Arrested After Beating Of Store Clerk During Robbery In Chinatown Caught On Video

A man accused of attacking a store clerk during a robbery in Chinatown, a disturbing incident that was caught on surveillance video, has been arrested. The robbery happened Sept. 14 at Angies Boutique on N Broadway. Surveillance video shows a man knocking the woman to the ground as he reaches over the counter. The employee tried stopping the suspect from stealing two art pieces, sparking a brief physical struggle in which she was punched in the face. The Los Angeles Police Department on Friday announced that Thornton Courtland was arrested in Hawthorne in connection to the robbery. Police say they're also investigating other robberies linked to the 31-year-old. He is being held on $80,000 bail. The store clerk who was beaten has since recovered from her injuries.

Inmate Captured Days After Escaping Los Angeles County Facility

An inmate who escaped a Los Angeles County conservation camp in Santa Clarita Thursday has been apprehended, officials announced Sunday. Marcelo S. Caparrotta, 53, was discovered missing from the Francisquito Conservation Camp around 9:40 p.m. and managed to elude authorities for several days. No details about Caparrotta’s capture were released in the email shared by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Sunday. News of Caparrotta’s capture was announced around 9:30 a.m. Caparrotta had been admitted from San Bernardino County to serve a 6-year sentence for “injury to an elder causing death/GBI and is a second striker,” the CDCR stated. Since 1977, 99% of all people who have left an adult institution, camp or community-based program without permission have been apprehended, according to the Department of Corrections.

Sentencing Due For LA County Woman In $6 Million Real Estate Scam

A Southern California woman who worked with her brother to operate a $6 million real estate fraud scam in which homes were listed for sale without the owners’ consent and would-be buyers were bilked out of money is expected to be sentenced Monday. Bianca Gonzalez, 41, of Walnut, pleaded guilty last year to one federal count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Her brother, Adolfo Schoneke, 46, of Torrance, also admitted his role in the scheme and was sentenced in October 2022 to nine years behind bars. Schoneke and Gonzalez, with the help of co-conspirators, operated real estate and escrow companies based in Cerritos, La Palma and Long Beach under various names, including MCR and West Coast. They admitted finding properties that they would list for sale — even though many were not on the market, and the pair did not have authority to list them. Prosecutors said they would then market the properties as short sales, providing opportunities for purchases at below-market prices.

Man Who Shot New Mexico Officer During Traffic Stop Gets 30 Years In Prison

A man who pleaded guilty to charges of attempted murder of a police officer earlier this year has been sentenced to 30 years in prison, FOX News reported. "Today, bravery prevailed over cowardice and truth over irrational hate," Alexander Uballez, U.S. Attorney for the District of New Mexico, said. "Federal law enforcement officers work every day to make our lives safer. When their lives are put at risk by someone who trained himself to fear police through fantastical internet videos, we will serve decisive justice to protect our protectors." Robert Benjamin Nelson, 31, was arrested in Sept. 2020 after he shot and wounded New Mexico State Police Sgt. Sharron Duran, who was working as a U.S. Homeland Security Investigations Task Force Officer, according to the report. Duran pulled Nelson over after seeing him drive too closely behind another vehicle. When Duran walked to the truck’s passenger window, Nelson shot at her three times with a handgun, shattering the window onto her face and eyes and wounding her hands as she put them up to shield herself. Duran fell but quickly got back up to return fire, according to the report. She also pursued Nelson when he sped away in his vehicle until he stopped to retrieve another weapon. When backup arrived, Nelson was arrested without further incident.

Last year, a teenager in a small Michigan town killed himself after an online chat turned to demands that he pay money to keep intimate photos secret. He was one of dozens of people targeted online by two men extradited from Nigeria to face charges, FBI director Christopher Wray said Saturday. The arrests came after the FBI joined with police in Michigan to investigate the death of 17-year-old Jordan DeMay, one of thousands of American teenagers targeted in a sharp rise in online “sextortion” cases in recent years. “They will face charges in the U.S. for what they did to Jordan, but also unfortunately, a whole bunch of other young men and teenage boys,” Wray said in an interview with The Associated Press. “You’re talking about a crime that doesn’t respect borders. We make sure our partnerships don’t have any borders either.” Wray highlighted the case in a speech to the International Association of Chiefs of Police about the ways the agency assists police in tackling violent crime, fentanyl and gangs. In a year where tensions between Congress and the FBI have run high at times, Wray focused on the agency's relationships with U.S. police departments large and small, including some 6,000 task force officers around the country. “The threats that we face collectively around the country are incredibly daunting," he said. “By far and away, the most effective means of tackling those threats is teamwork.”

2 People Suffer Minor Injuries In Fire At Pacoima Home

Firefighters Sunday knocked down a fire that spread to the attic of a home in Pacoima. The fire broke out just before 11 a.m. in the 10800 block of N. El Dorado Avenue. When firefighters arrived, they worked to knock down the blaze. It was extinguished within 29 minutes, the Los Angeles Fire Department reported. Two residents sustained minor injuries and were assessed at the scene. Both declined medical transport. No other injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

ATF Investigating Mobile Shooting Range Fire That Injured LA County Sheriff's Deputies

Special agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives joined the investigation into a fire inside a mobile shooting range that left two Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies with critical burns. ATF agents could be seen Friday examining the burned wreckage of the trailer at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic. Officials told the NBC4 I-Team that members of the ATF's National Response Team were working to identify the cause of the fire that started Tuesday morning while the deputies were inside the trailer. Sheriff Robert Luna said both deputies suffered critical injuries from burns. The trailer was one of 15 the sheriff's department uses to evaluate deputies' shooting skills each quarter, and one of the deputies inside was shooting a handgun qualification program when the fire ignited. Multiple law enforcement sources told the I-Team that either an automatic lock on the door, or the pressure or heat from the fire, delayed efforts by other deputies to rescue the pair trapped inside. The sheriff's department said it closed all of its remaining shooting trailers while the cause of the fire was under investigation.
