My friend,
Donald Trump incited the January 6th insurrection and attempted to overturn the 2020 Presidential election. Last month, a lawsuit was filed to determine whether former President Trump’s actions disqualify him from the Colorado ballot. The 14th Amendment of the United States Constitution says that anyone who swore an oath to the Constitution and then engaged in “insurrection or rebellion” or “given aid or comfort to the enemies” of the Constitution is disqualified from office. There are many questions about how this provision works.
This is an extraordinary situation that we haven’t seen before as a nation. A sitting president incited an insurrection, and now there are constitutional questions about whether he is disqualified from the Colorado ballot.
I look to the Colorado Court’s substantive resolution of the issues, and I am hopeful that this case will provide guidance to election officials on Trump’s eligibility as a candidate for office.
It is important to me to make sure Americans have facts about our elections and this important lawsuit. You can see my explanation of the lawsuit in these interviews: PBS News Hour [[link removed]] , The Reid Out, [[link removed]] and Deadline Whitehouse [[link removed]] .
In addition to this lawsuit, Trump faces criminal charges for his attempts to steal the 2020 election and the right to vote from the American people. The American people have chosen democracy over chaos time and again in recent years, and they will have to do so again in the coming months during the presidential election. The future of our nation is still on the line as we enter 2024.
