On February 21, 1943, Pan American Airways’ celebrated seaplane, the Yankee Clipper, took off from New York’s Marine Air Terminal and island-hopped its way across the Atlantic Ocean. Arriving at Lisbon the following evening, it crashed in the Tagus River, killing twenty-four of its thirty-nine passengers and crew. Brooke L. Blower talks about her work reconstructing the backstories of seven worldly Americans aboard that plane—their personal histories, their politics, and how their wartime movements upend common American World War II narratives.

Last winter’s combat presented one of the biggest challenges for Ukraine, as Russia launched unprecedented attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. This winter promises to bring additional obstacles, as troops continue their counteroffensive with a damaged energy sector. The results of the winter will have ramifications for Ukraine’s political future and how it will handle short-term challenges. This panel will consider the key challenges for Ukraine and its society according to surveys conducted by the Ukrainian Institute for the Future, how Ukraine is preparing for the winter, the potential for elections in Ukraine, and the general economic situation in the country.
