This presidential election is about two things: finding the candidate who can truly, actually beat Donald Trump in November and picking the leader who can bring our country together once in office.

That is our cause right now. That’s our mission. And our best bet to do that is Joe Biden.

As so many presidential candidates have pointed out, there’s more work to do beyond beating Donald Trump. And, of course, they’re right.

So we need to pick a candidate who can beat Trump and also carry the rest of our candidates down the ballot along, helping our House and Senate candidates running in tough districts across the country.

Put simply, the cost of not focusing on beating Donald Trump—of picking a candidate who cannot build a broad coalition—could be a disaster for our party and progressive values come November.

It would be a disaster for the most vulnerable Americans—the ones who our party speaks up for. Americans with pre-existing conditions. Americans who depend on the social safety net. Americans who are disabled or retired. Our veterans. Our communities of color.

The cost of another four years of Donald Trump is just too high for us to get this wrong. And it’s not hyperbolic to say that there are many Americans whose lives depend on it. There are lives abroad that depend on it, too.

So, look, John. Cory Booker talked about love. Andrew Yang talked about automation. Amy Klobuchar talked about the heartland. Mayor Pete talked about a new generation of leaders. Tom Steyer talked about climate change. Bernie and Warren talk about taking on corruption.

Let’s take all those important issues and come together as a party in 2020 to get Donald Trump out of the White House. Vice President Biden is the best candidate to do just that.

He’s surging, and Democrats are coming together behind him. But there’s still a long way to go, and this election is going to require all of us stepping up and working hard each day until November.
