In 2018, almost 50 years to the day when Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman ever elected to Congress, Lauren became the youngest Black woman ever elected to serve in Congress.

And just like Chisholm, Lauren has made good on her promise to be “unbought and unbossed” as a fearless, outspoken leader for working families in Illinois.

Over the last five years, she’s maintained her commitment by advocating for progressive, thoughtful legislation to lower costs for working families, protect women’s right to make their own reproductive health care choices, and expand access to quality, affordable health care — regardless of pre-existing conditions — a cause that is deeply personal to her as a registered nurse who has a pre-existing condition of her own.

If we want to keep a dedicated leader like Lauren in Congress, we have to be prepared for the reelection battle ahead.
