Dear John,
This week, we joined Canada’s Jewish community, Canadians generally, and all good citizens of the world in trying to comprehend the scale of death and destruction of Hamas’ barbaric, revolting, multi-pronged terror assault targeting innocent civilians – children, women, and men. It has broken our hearts and left each of us shocked and grieving for the lives lost. With many families shattered, the undeniable physical and mental trauma inflicted on our brothers and sisters across Israel has been made infinitely worse by the rallies in Canadian cities in support of Hamas’ deadly campaign of terror.
But our resolve to stand with the people of Israel, and to preserve and protect Jewish life in Canada, has only been strengthened. Tomorrow, almost 1,000 Canadians will be in Ottawa at Antisemitism: Face It, Fight It, learning from dozens of experts, thought leaders, and influencers from across the globe on how to become engaged activists in the fight against antisemitism.
In this tragic and terrifying time for the people of Israel, and for Jews in Canada and around the world, we will find strength in each other and draw upon our long record of survival against those who would see us vanquished. If you are joining us, we look forward to seeing you. If you were not able to sign up, we will be sharing the knowledge, skills, and resources that we gain in Ottawa in the weeks and months to come.
The CIJA Team
Throughout these devastating few days, we have engaged with the political sector across Canada, activating our allies, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau <[link removed]>, Minister Melanie Joly <[link removed]> , Pierre Poilievre <[link removed]> , Yves-Francois Blanchet <[link removed]>, and Jagmeet Singh <[link removed]>, to stand with Israel.
We have also engaged Canadian media to ensure the Canadian Jewish community’s perspective and concerns are included in their coverage. For this week’s CIJA in the News section, we have selected just a few of the approximately 1,300 articles in which CIJA was quoted.
Our security team has been assured by law enforcement across Canada that they’re monitoring the situation in Israel and its impact on local communities, including planned rallies and protests, and that they are in contact with Jewish institutions within their respective jurisdictions to determine what other security might be required.
In response to unprecedented acts of terror in Israel by the Iran-backed terrorist entity Hamas, CIJA, all Jewish federations across Canada, and Jewish Federations of Canada-UIA, released a joint statement. You can read it here <[link removed]>.
Solidarity events were held in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Hamilton, Windsor, and Halifax; and many municipalities across Canada, including Toronto, <[link removed]>Ottawa <[link removed]>, Hamilton <[link removed]>, and Winnipeg <[link removed]>, illuminated monuments in Israeli blue and white.
And as a founding member, we signed a joint statement from J7, The Large Communities’ Task Force Against Antisemitism. You can read it here <[link removed]>.
Throughout the week, we have been providing updates on social media to keep you aware of all the developments. We encourage you to share them widely.
