John,

Almost 40 years ago, I was a member of a diverse coalition of organizers who came together to take on the Chicago machine - and won. Together, we elected Chicago’s first black mayor, Harold Washington, and empowered the communities we called home.

We were young, scrappy, and idealistic. We didn’t always agree, and we didn’t always get it right the first time. But we came together - African-Americans, Mexican-Americans, Puertorriqueños, and more - and we stuck together. We never forgot where we came from, or who we were fighting for.

Today, we are building a grassroots movement across Chicagoland to bring up the next generation of leaders from minority communities, and arming them with the tools they need to run for office. Our coalition candidates are already leaders in their own right in their communities. They are in the streets, organizing and tackling the biggest issues we face head on. Our coalition is dedicated to turning these activists into our future elected officials, and building the proportional representation Latino and other minority communities deserve.

I’ve seen what’s possible when we stand together. Under Mayor Harold Washington, Chicago became the first sanctuary city in the nation. His example inspired me to keep fighting for workers, immigration, educators, the minimum wage, and universal healthcare. Representation matters.

The March 17 primary is coming up fast, and our coalition candidates need as many volunteers we can get to knock on doors and turn out our communities on Election Day. In the days and weeks to come, we will be sharing our candidates’ stories and highlighting what you can do to help them win.

Together, we will empower our communities across Chicagoland and the nation.
