Dear John,

As National Hispanic Heritage Month is coming to a close, the NYIC staff invites you to celebrate all year long by diving into a few of their favorite book recommendations to keep you busy until next year!

This is a small selection of suggestions including fiction, nonfiction, and autobiographies.

  • “Solito: A Memoir” by Javier Zamora

    • In his memoir, Javier retells his nine-week odyssey across Central America to get to Arizona.

    • "So good" - Reed Dunlea, Manager of Communications, Press Secretary

  • “The Undocumented Americans” by Karla Cornejo Villavicencio

    • The book is part memoir, part essays about undocumented day laborers whose stories aren’t typically voiced

    • "This one's a classic, but so good” - Indira Martinez, Manager of Development, Individuals & Events

  • “I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter” by Erika Sánchez

    • After a tragedy happens in the family, the daughter of a Mexican family in the United States searches for the truth behind who her sister was, and if she’s able to break away from her parents’ expectations.

    • Recommended by Cassandra Bocanegra, Manager of Organizing and Strategy, Finger Lakes

We’d love to hear from you! If you have any recommendations, you can tag @thenyic on X or comment on our latest Instagram post. Let us know what you thought of our recommendations too!

We hope your reading list just got bigger! Enjoy reading these on the upcoming fall nights, and be on the lookout for more book recommendations coming your way!

Warmly,

Diana and Flavia
