Kellywood was killed in the line of duty Feb. 17 while responding to a call near the Hon-Dah Resort and Casino. ”Today is about David,” said White Mountain Apache Councilman Jerold Altaha at the beginning of the service. Hundreds of law enforcement officers and White Mountain Apache community members showed up at the Chief Alchesay Activity Center to pay their respects to Kellywood and his family. ”We recognize the ultimate sacrifice he made and the ultimate sacrifice his family made,” Altaha said. Several people spoke during the service, each of them paying tribute to Kellywood's character as a father, son, brother and officer. Arizona Republic Handcuffed Suspect Shoots, Wounds Pennsylvania Trooper Details of an alleged shooting Saturday morning that involved a Pennsylvania State Trooper on Lincoln Way East in Chambersburg were described in an affidavit of probable cause obtained by The Record Herald. Robert William Ransom, 20, of Chambersburg, is charged with two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer among several other charges after shooting a state trooper during a traffic stop around 2 a.m. Saturday, according to court documents. The state trooper was flown to a local hospital, state police said in a release on Saturday. According to an affidavit of probable cause, the state trooper — identified as Trooper Jason Brindle — was shot in the pelvic area during a struggle with Ransom, who was already patted down and had his hands cuffed behind his back when the gunshot occurred. The Record Herald DUI, Hit-and-Run Suspected After Pedestrian Fatally Struck By Vehicle In Reseda A man was suspected of intoxicated driving and hit-and-run after striking and killing a woman as she crossed a street in Reseda late Monday, police said. The fatal collision took place about 6:55 p.m. at Hart Street and near Tampa Avenue, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Tony Im said. The woman was crossing Tampa Street when she was struck by the vehicle, which was headed north, Lt. Debra Brownsten of the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division said. “The driver failed to stop. Some citizens got him to stop further down the street,” she said. The victim succumbed to her injuries a short time later at a hospital, officials said. She was described as a woman in her 30s. Officers could be seen administering a field sobriety test to a man at the scene before putting him in handcuffs and placing him in the back of a police vehicle. His identity was not available. KTLA 5 Authorities Searching For 54-Year-Old Man With Mental Capacity Of 7-Year-Old Authorities Monday are seeking the public’s help to find a 54-year-old man with the mental capacity of a 7-year-old last seen in the Reseda area. Gunther Palmer was last seen on Feb. 20 about 3 p.m. near the 7900 block of Tampa Avenue, near Strathern Street. Palmer has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old and has trouble remembering his name, police reported. He is described as white, 6 feet, 2 inches tall, 180 pounds, with long brown hair, blue eyes, and a mustache, according to police. Authorities circulated a photo of Palmer and encouraged anyone with information about the case to contact the LAPD’s Missing Persons Unit at 213-996-1800, or during non-business hours, 1-877-LAPD-24-7. The three-justice panel from California’s 2nd District Court of Appeal rejected the defense’s contention that the trial court improperly limited argument and excluded certain evidence of Kevin Moran’s intoxication at the time of the Jan. 14, 2017, crash that killed Folesha Parker-Iverson, 52, and seriously injured her passenger, Terrance Fitch. “Because intoxication may increase an individual’s recklessness, the court properly admitted evidence of Moran’s voluntary intoxication to establish he acted with conscious disregard for the risk his drinking and driving would pose to human life,” the panel noted in its nine-page ruling. Forty-one-year-old Jose Loza of Whittier was sentenced for allegedly overseeing Mexican Mafia control over street gangs in Whittier, Santa Fe Springs, Riverside and Stockton. Prosecutors say Loza, acting on the orders of an imprisoned Mexican Mafia leader, collected taxes on drug-dealing and other activities by the gangs. Prosecutors also alleged that Loza killed a fellow Mexican Mafia member who was believed to have encroached on the territories of other members. The man was shot to death at a San Gabriel Valley restaurant in 2016. The victim's bodyguard and an innocent restaurant patron were wounded. Loza was convicted last month of a dozen felonies, including racketeering conspiracy and using a firearm during a crime of violence. NBC 4 Feds: Fresh Out Of Prison For Shooting, Los Angeles Gang Member Found With Loaded Gun In San Pablo Months after he was released from state prison for a shooting conviction, an alleged Los Angeles gang member is facing federal charges of possessing ammunition as a felon. According to the criminal complaint, the charges stem from an arrest last January in San Pablo, where police recovered a pistol loaded with an extended magazine. The defendant, Daniel Andres Scallion-Martinez, 24, was charged in federal court last week, according to a recently-unsealed complaint. According to the complaint, Scallion-Martinez had recently been released from a four-year prison term related to a 2016 shooting in San Rafael. According to the complaint, Scallion-Martinez shot the San Rafael victim over gang graffiti; two gangs were tagging over one another at a wall on Verdi Street, and Scallion-Martinez believed the victim was one of the people responsible for spray-painting over his gang’s moniker. San Pablo police arrested Scallion-Martinez on Jan. 14, after responding to a report of a suspicious car. Los Angeles Daily News Police: 10-Year-Old Central California Boy Killed By Father In Murder-Suicide A Central California man shot and killed his 10-year-old son Monday morning before taking his own life in an apparent murder-suicide, authorities said. Victor Gomes, 43, was found dead with a gunshot wound to his head at a home he shares with his parents in Hanford, police Capt. Karl Anderson said at a news conference. The man’s parents were home at the time of the shootings. The boy, identified as Wyland Gomes, died of his injuries at a hospital. “It’s a horribly sad day for us,” Anderson said. Gomes lost full custody of his son after it was reported in 2016 that he had suicidal thoughts and owned a gun, the captain said. He was ordered to turn over his gun to the Hanford Police Department, which still has the weapon, he said. The weapon used in Monday’s shootings was a handgun Gomes legally purchased in 2017 after he completed a mental health evaluation and was allowed to have supervised visits with his son, Anderson said. John Lee, a former aide to City Councilman Mitchell Englander is vying against astrophysicist and Cal State Northridge educator Loraine Lundquist. Civil engineer Asaad Alnajjar is also running, as a certified write-in candidate. The winner will represent Council District 12 that stretches across 60 square miles and across encompasses communities in Northridge, Granada Hills and Porter Ranch and includes roughly 270,000 constituents. If the top candidate gets 51% or more of the voter, they will claim the office — otherwise, the top two finishers will compete in the November runoff. The next council member will also face simmering issues such as dealing with the Aliso Canyon natural gas storage facility, locating sites for homeless housing and finding a route for the rapid bus transit line. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority is offering free rides on all of its trains and buses Tuesday, the day of California’s presidential primary election. Free fares also will be available for the agency’s Bike Share program. “We want to make it easy for people to get to the polls and cast their vote this election year,” Inglewood Mayor James Butts, Metro’s current board chairman, said in a statement. “Metro wants to make sure all of the region’s voters get the message and vote.” Other area transportation agencies — including the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, Long Beach Transit and Pasadena Transit — also are offering courtesy lifts on Election Day.
