WE HAVE LESS THAN 50 DAYS TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR PRESIDENT BIDEN'S RULE TO EXPAND BRADY BACKGROUND CHECKS. PLEASE ADD YOUR NAME!

John,

President Biden recently used his executive power to its fullest extent in addressing our nation’s gun violence epidemic: His administration issued a rule that, if put into effect, would be the broadest expansion of firearm background checks in decades.

The rule aims to clarify the definition of what it means to be “engaged in the business” of selling firearms. A clear definition will ensure that individuals selling firearms for profit will have to conduct background checks, which moves us as close as possible to universal background checks without the urgently needed Congressional action.

Today, 1 in 5 guns are sold WITHOUT a Brady Background Check through private sales at gun shows and on thriving online gun marketplaces, which means that at least 20% of the firearms sold in the United States could go to people legally prohibited from possessing a gun — and no one would ever know.

Brady has worked tirelessly to get this consequential rule introduced — and now we need your help getting it passed the finish line, John.

Will you show your support by signing our letter to the Department of Justice? We have less than 50 days to show an outpouring of support for the Biden-Harris Administration’s proposed rule and we know the NRA and its allies will do everything in their power to stop our progress, so please take action now! October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month 💜

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we're drawing special attention to the role firearms play in acts of domestic violence and the life-saving solutions to prevent it. Guns are the weapon of choice for domestic violence homicides in America, and female intimate partners are more likely to be murdered with a firearm than by all other means combined.

While anyone can experience domestic violence, data shows that women are uniquely vulnerable. In fact, a woman is shot and killed by a current or former partner every 16 hours, and when there is a gun in a home with a history of domestic violence, there is a 500% higher chance that a woman will be murdered.

The stakes for survivors of domestic violence couldn’t be higher right now. In November, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in U.S. vs. Rahimi and determine whether an individual subject to a domestic violence restraining order can be prohibited from possessing a firearm. Brady filed an amicus brief [[link removed]?] urging the Supreme Court to protect survivors of domestic abuse and make clear that we’re all safer when domestic abusers do not have access to firearms.

To learn more about this case and the intersection of domestic violence and firearms, please listen to our podcast episodes.

Brady President Kris Brown and Brady Board Chair and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joseph Sakran at the award ceremony at Johns Hopkins.

As a trauma surgeon, a survivor, and an advocate, Dr. Sakran is the definition of a helper and has made a lasting impact on those around him. Last week, Dr. Sakran was one of the lead surgeons who treated victims [[link removed]] of the Morgan State University shooting. Because of Joe and his team at Johns Hopkins, the students survived. His leadership is felt outside the trauma room, too.

Through Brady’s This Is Our Lane [[link removed]] campaign, Joe has contributed to significant victories for our movement, including the creation [[link removed]] of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, historic funding for gun violence prevention research, and so much more.

Fred Rogers once said, “In every neighborhood, all across our country, there are good people insisting on a good start for the young, and doing something about it.” Dr. Sakran is a shining example of these words, and we couldn’t be more proud to have him at Brady. Please join us in congratulating Joe on social media! [[link removed]]
