The Thorn West

The Thorn West is a state and local news roundup compiled by members of DSA-LA. Our goal is to provide a weekly update on the latest developments in state and local politics, and to track the issues that are most important to our membership.

Issue No. 178 - October 13, 2023

The below was emailed to dues-paying members of DSA-LA on Wednesday.

“DSA Los Angeles continues to mourn the loss of life caused by the recent escalation of conflict in Israel and Palestine. We are heartbroken for the everyday people killed, injured, and taken hostage by Hamas as part of a brutal attack targeting residential areas. We are devastated by the right-wing Netanyahu government's asymmetric and escalating military response in Gaza, in which thousands of Palestinians have already been killed. As always, we stand in solidarity with Palestinians oppressed by the Israeli government’s apartheid regime.

We join DSA-endorsed congresswomen Rashida Tlaib and Cori Bush, along with international Leftist organizations across the globe, including leftist governments in Honduras, Mexico, Brazil, Bolivia, the São Paulo Forum and many others in calling for an immediate ceasefire, urgent deescalation, and an end to the occupation of Palestine. We unequivocally condemn the escalating actions by Israel’s right-wing government, who have called Palestinians “human animals,” cut off electricity, food, and water, and launched indiscriminate air strikes, which have already killed hundreds of Palestinians in Gaza. This week’s violence has shown once again that occupation and blockade not only harms Palestinians, but cannot ensure Israelis’ safety. Violence will only beget more violence, and this cycle will continue so long as Israel maintains its system of apartheid and siege on Gaza.”

DSA-LA is also encouraging members to join a “No Money For Massacres” phone bank organized by NYC DSA. The phone bank will urge members of Congress to vote no on any attempts to send further weapons or funding to the Israeli government and military.

State Politics

  • October 16 is the deadline for Californians to file their income taxes for 2023; the deadline was extended following the state’s winter storms.

City Politics

  • Governor Newsom signed SB 411, which will allow Los Angeles Neighborhood Councils to resume meeting remotely. This week, Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez put forth the motion that will make this official city policy. As in-person meeting requirements were reinstated, many Neighborhood Councils have seen membership decline. (Check your local NC for opportunities to easily apply for an open seat.)

Labor

Housing Rights

  • One of Los Angeles’ most prominent landlord attorneys, self-marketed as a specialist in tenant evictions, has been sanctioned for submitting a filing that cited nonexistent case law — likely because it was written by AI.

  • DSA-LA is gearing up to organize tenants, rallying against Los Angeles’ impending 7%–9% rent hike in RSO units. Attend this Sunday’s Power to the Tenants Organizer Training to learn more.
