Hello, Friends —

After I was joined last week by seven other brave Republicans in removing Rep. Kevin McCarthy from the Speakership, the House Republican Conference has been working tirelessly to elect a new candidate for Speaker of the House. On Wednesday, members of the Republican conference held a closed-door election to choose our nominee for Speaker on the House floor. The contest was between two candidates: House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan. My vote went to Chairman Jordan, but Majority Leader Scalise ultimately won the election, prevailing 113 to 99.

After a day of working to lock up additional votes, Majority Leader Scalise ultimately calculated that he could not get to the requisite 217 votes and withdrew from the Speaker's race.

Following Majority Leader Scalise's exit from the race, Chairman Jordan announced that he is again running. I believe it is time to elect Jim Jordan as Speaker of the House. He is a trusted conservative who can bring House Republicans together, and I am confident he would cultivate trust and keep the House of Representatives transparent and accountable to the American people.

No matter how the Speaker's election ultimately turns out, House Republicans should embrace transparency by moving the Speaker's election out from behind closed doors onto the House floor. I think the process that occurred in January on the floor, where it took Kevin McCarthy 15 rounds of voting to become Speaker, was an important process for the American people to see. If it takes several rounds of voting again to elect our new Speaker, so be it — the American people deserve to see where their representatives stand on who should assume the Speaker's chair.

On Thursday, I hosted an episode of Firebrand, where I gave updates on the search for a new Speaker of the House of Representatives and reflected on all the viable candidates who could step into the role. I'm calling on the U.S. House of Representatives to elect the conservative who comes to work to serve the American people: Jim Jordan.

REP. GAETZ: SOFT-ON-CRIME POLICIES HAVE DESTROYED WASHINGTON, D.C.

On Thursday, I attended a House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance hearing, where Washington, D.C. first responders, community leaders, and business owners gave their testimony on the uncontrollable crime in the city. Soft-on-crime policies and strict gun-control laws have made Washington, D.C., increasingly dangerous. Firefighters and EMTs have to sometimes wait 20 minutes or more for police response at a crime scene. It is unacceptable that this is happening in our nation's capital and is worthy of federal review.

FIREBRAND EP. 118: ISRAEL IS AT WAR

On Tuesday's episode of Firebrand, I discussed Hamas' terrorist attacks and military operations against Israel. I am deeply troubled by the actions of Hamas and the threat they pose to innocent lives in the region. Israel, as a sovereign nation, has every right to safeguard its citizens from external threats. I will continue to pray for peace in the region and for the safety of U.S. citizens in Israel.

GAETZ IN THE NEWS

Trump Says Rep. Matt Gaetz Of Florida May Have Done 'Tremendous Favor' For Republican Party

"On Thursday, speaking with Brian Kilmeade, former President Donald Trump told Kilmeade that Gaetz may have done a 'tremendous favor' for the GOP. 'Well, he was upset that Kevin was doing a lot of the Obama work, he was working on the budget and getting something approved that, you know, we could have gotten a lot for, and the debt ceiling, everybody was hurt with that,' said Trump. 'At the same time, Kevin's a great guy, he is a wonderful guy, but people were hurt by that. It depends, I mean, on how good the new speaker, whoever that may be, how good he does. Maybe we'll end up with one of the great speakers of all time, in which case Matt Gaetz did a tremendous favor,' said Trump."

Republicans Gaetz, Greene blast party's closed-door speaker discussions

"Gaetz tweeted that he agreed with Greene, saying the House GOP should 'do the messy work of governing and leadership selection in front of the people. Just like I voted against McCarthy time after time…in public…making my argument, others should have to reveal their thinking and be appropriately judged by their voters,' Gaetz said.'We elected [and] removed McCarthy with total transparency,' the Florida congressman said of his motion to vacate, a very public House function. 'Let’s replace him in the same manner.'"

DC First Responder Says Police Shortage Endangers EMT Lives

"'That's the state we're in right now. I’ve waited an excess of 20 minutes before to try and get MPD [the Metropolitan Police Department] on scene for a violent call,' Richards told the subcommittee.'What do you do for 20 minutes?' Republican Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz asked.'We stage. And we wait, because, at this point, we're not … we're not going into those scenes,' Richards said. 'And so, therefore, the citizens are not getting treated, right? They can't have our services because it's not safe for us to go in there. That sounds like life or death to me, that people could actually die because we don’t have enough police to even keep our own first responders safe that want to save people's lives,' Gaetz said."
