Daily Docket — Friday, Oct. 13

Here are some legal updates from today.

  • In a win for voters, a Trump-appointed federal judge struck down the commissioner districts of Galveston County, Texas for violating Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act by diluting Black and Latino voting power.

    • The judge ordered the commissioners court — the county’s governing body — to submit a new map that contains at least one majority-minority precinct by Oct. 20. If the commissioners do not, a map already reviewed by the federal court will be enacted on Nov. 1.

  • A New York court held a hearing in a lawsuit backed by the Republican National Committee and other GOP groups challenging the state’s new mail-in voting law that permits New Yorkers to vote by mail during the early voting period.

  • Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) moved to join a lawsuit brought by voters arguing that the state's legislative districts are extreme partisan gerrymanders that unfairly favor Republicans and violate the state constitution.

Here’s what’s coming up on Monday.

  • Trial will take place in a federal lawsuit brought by a conservative group challenging New Mexico’s ability to criminally prosecute a right-wing group for violating state statutes that protect voter data.
