Now, Biden is asking the public to weigh in on strengthening protections for more than 13 million acres in the Western Arctic and future leasing in the Arctic Refuge. Alaska’s North Slope, which includes both the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Western Arctic Reserve, is home to a vast array of species, including caribou, migratory birds, bears, and miles of untrammeled tundra full of flowers, lichens, and other resilient plants. It is also home to the Gwich’in Nation, who have occupied the Arctic since time immemorial.
