The Republican congressional caucus narrowly selected Steve Scalise as their nominee for House Speaker over Jim Jordan – and then Scalise withdrew his name from consideration. And here’s the kicker:
A vote to elect the new Speaker is now further delayed for the foreseeable future while a new candidate scrambles to secure a majority of House members.
Is it any wonder my Democratic colleagues and I are as mad as hell?
As a consequence of the Chaos Caucus firing their own Speaker, the work of Congress has ground to a screeching halt. Republicans are pushing the people’s business to one side, forcing us to wait for them to get it together.
The Chaos Caucus could not have chosen a worse moment to cave to extremist members and oust their Speaker.
Critical situations in Israel and Ukraine are demanding Congress’ immediate attention. A government shutdown with devastating consequences for millions of servicemembers, seniors, hardworking families, and small businesses is imminent — but congressional Republicans remain focused on their petty internal politics.
However, while chaos runs rampant among Republicans, Democrats are united behind Hakeem Jeffries in the vote(s) for the new Speaker. I will support Hakeem when Republicans finally allow a floor vote.
Here’s the deal. Congressional Republicans show they are incapable of governing, putting politics before people. It’s time to send them packing.
House Democrats are ready to get back to work for the American people. The Republican shutdown of Congress is outrageous. It’s time for them to act responsibly and resume House business.
