Governor DeWine announced the appointment of Diana Welling as Ohio?s State Historic Preservation Officer. [ [link removed] ]

"I am pleased to appoint Diana Welling as Ohio's State Historic Preservation Officer," said Governor DeWine. "Ohio has so many treasured historic places - including the recent designation of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks as a UNESCO World Heritage Site - that are part of what makes Ohio the heart of it all."

A State Historic Preservation Officer is an appointed official in each of the 59 states, territories, and the District of Columbia who is responsible for overseeing preservation offices and programs in accordance with the National Historic Preservation Act. In the states, this individual is appointed by the chief elected official, usually a governor.

CDL Event

Lt. Governor Husted, director of InnovateOhio, announced three new modernizations for Ohio truck drivers that will make obtaining and renewing a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) easier without lowering standards. [ [link removed] ]

"Ohio is the heart of manufacturing and logistics in the country," said Lt. Governor Husted. ?Freight infrastructure has made our state an anchor for global and domestic supply chains. We want Ohio to be the best state in the country for truck drivers to live, work, and raise a family, and through these kinds of technological upgrades, in which it's easier for truckers to comply, we're eliminating friction and taking meaningful steps in that direction."

Governor DeWine announced that nearly $8 million in grant funding is available [ [link removed] ] to support safety and security enhancements at religious institutions, chartered non-public schools, licensed preschools, and nonprofit organizations in Ohio.?

The funding will be awarded as part of the fourth round of the Ohio Safety and Security Grant Program. Governor DeWine launched the program in 2019 in partnership with the Ohio General Assembly. About $18 million has been awarded over the previous three rounds, with a significant amount directed toward Jewish organizations throughout Ohio.?

Lt. Governor Husted toured the Lincoln-West School of Science and Health at MetroHealth in Cleveland. This high school inside of a hospital provides specialized learning opportunities for students interested in health care.

Later in the day, Lt. Governor Husted provided remarks at the Ohio VC Fest in Cleveland where he emphasized the importance of uniting the venture capital and startup communities to accelerate innovation in Ohio, empowering the next wave of tech entrepreneurs.

Governor DeWine announced a $100 million investment [ [link removed] ] of federal State Opioid and Stimulant Response (SOS, formerly SOR) funding from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to help communities fight opioid addiction and prevent overdose deaths.

The investment is a continuation of year one funding [ [link removed] ] received last year by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (OhioMHAS) that will strengthen and sustain an array of prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and long-term recovery supports for Ohioans struggling with an opioid or stimulant use disorder. More than 7,800 Ohioans were served in year one of the SOS initiative.

?Ohio continues to make good progress in our effort to stem the tide of opioid addiction, but our work is far from over,? said Governor DeWine. ?While the rate of unintentional overdose deaths is slowing, our work must continue. This funding will help us save lives and promote stronger, healthier communities.?

Governor DeWine visited the Early Childhood Education Lab and the William L. Mallory Early Learning Center at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College to learn more about the Literacy Lab's Leading Men Fellowship and how fellows help implement daily literacy interventions based on the science of reading into early learning classrooms.

First Lady Fran DeWine hosted a book reading at Ashley Wornstaff Memorial Library to promote Dolly Parton?s Imagination Library of Ohio.?Statewide, the Imagination Library has enrolled 391,381 children, totaling 59% of eligible kids within Ohio.

The Imagination?Library mails one high-quality, age-appropriate book to each youth enrolled in the program every month until their 5th birthday. All Ohio children ? from birth to age 5 ? are eligible to enroll in the program at no cost to their families by signing up here [ [link removed] ].

Randy Gardner

Governor DeWine announced that Chancellor Randy Gardner (pictured) of the Ohio Department of Higher Education has notified him of his intention to retire [ [link removed] ] on Dec. 31, 2023, after a long career in public service.??

?I want to thank Chancellor Gardner for his years of service to the people of the state of Ohio.? As a legislator and as chancellor, Randy Gardner has worked hard to make educational opportunities more accessible and to encourage cooperation of our institutions to work hand-in-hand with industries such as Intel to ensure that Ohio has the workers ready to fill the jobs of the future,? said Governor DeWine.

Governor DeWine nominated Ohio Department of Higher Education Senior Vice Chancellor Mike Duffey [ [link removed] ]to succeed Chancellor Gardner. Duffey?s nomination will require confirmation by the Ohio Senate.

Lt. Governor Husted provided remarks at the Aim Hire Workforce and Education Conference in Columbus to workforce, education, and industry partners about the importance of preparing students for the future workforce and how they can leverage statewide resources.

Also on Thursday, Lt. Governor Husted announced the application period [ [link removed] ] for High School Tech Internship Intermediaries. Selected intermediary organizations will serve as points of contact for businesses and education entities throughout the high school tech internship process.

Governor DeWine welcomed governors and others from the Great Lakes St. Lawrence region to Ohio for the 2023 Great Lakes St. Lawrence Governors & Premiers Leadership Summit in Cleveland. The summit is bringing together leaders from Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Quebec, and Wisconsin to discuss the growth of the region's economy and the protection of the Great Lakes.

Governor DeWine and First Lady DeWine also helped plant a tree on Cleveland's Lakefront Plaza to launch the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Trees Initiative that aims to plant 250 million trees by 2033.

Governor DeWine praised the selection of the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) as one of just seven projects selected to receive funding to produce low-cost, clean hydrogen in the United States.

?The announcement today that the ARCH2 has been chosen as a new regional hydrogen fuel hub will open up new opportunities for the resource and talent-rich Appalachian region,? said Governor DeWine. ??By choosing Appalachia, the new hydrogen hub will be located where there is an abundance of natural resources including low-cost natural gas production and storage, existing pipelines, transportation networks, and vast end-use markets, as well proximity to end-use markets in the Midwest and Northeast. Creating a hydrogen hub is also an important component of a diversified and reliable energy portfolio."

Children's Initiative

Governor DeWine and Ohio Department of Children and Youth Director Kara Wente announced the creation of the Ohio Promote Resources, Opportunities, and Meaningful Inclusion through Support and Education (PROMISE) program, [ [link removed] ] a new initiative focused on increasing access to quality child care and support services for children with special needs.

?We?ve heard from families across the state regarding their struggle to find quality child care for children with special needs,? said Governor DeWine. ?Providing training and a new provider credential, as well as program designations, signal to parents where they can find child care prepared to include all children.?
