John,
After the 2020 election, Donald Trump used right-wing media like Fox News and One America News Network to spread ‘the Big Lie.’
Two months later, rioters stormed the Capitol, many sincerely believing Trump’s baseless lie that Democrats had stolen the election.
Nearly three years later, our democracy is still reeling. An August CNN poll found that an overwhelming majority of Republican and Republican-leaning voters (nearly 70%) still believe that the election was stolen.
We founded Courier Newsroom as a direct response to this toxic dynamic, John. We believe right-wing media can and should be held accountable for the harm they are doing to our democracy and we’re asking for your help to fight back.
When bad actors like Fox News spread dangerous lies, those lies spread far beyond their right-wing audiences. As we saw on January 6th, those lies first spread to influencers, inboxes, and newsfeeds, and then spill into our local communities.
The impact stokes violence, division, and a deep distrust in journalism and our public institutions.
To fight back, Courier’s innovative model uses quality, local journalism to stop the spread of lies at their online sources.
Our newsroom teams in nine battleground states (and growing!) correct the record in real time while providing invaluable local news coverage to communities that are vulnerable to right-wing manipulation.
But in order to keep the lights on in our newsrooms, we need your generous support.
