Changing Interpersonal Racism in Health Care

In her Narrative Matters essay

in the October issue, "Tackling Structural Racism In Health," Maranda
Ward documents how a visit to the dental office to receive a crown on a
tooth ended in an encounter with police.

Ward writes that while she was initially scheduled to receive a crown,
she was told by a treatment coordinator that she had to first receive a
crown buildup, which would require 80 percent of the procedure to be
paid for upfront.

Confused by the change in treatment plan and unexpected out-of-pocket
payment that did not match what she had coordinated with the office
receptionist, Ward asked to speak with her dentist. The treatment
coordinator refused, and ultimately called police on Ward.

Ward understood her experience as an instance of implicit bias and
structural racism.

She concludes that tackling structural and interpersonal racism within
health care requires training on implicit bias and antiracism.

Ward is the recipient of the 2022 Justice, Equity, Diversity,
Inclusion-Civic and Community Engagement Award for her development of
a structural racism curriculum aimed at medical students.
