Friend, it’s been a tough week for our country and indeed the
world. Here are some quick thoughts and updates.
We Stand With
Israel
America must always stand with Israel. Period.
I am a
proud graduate of the Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange
(GILEE). I spent time in Israel, learning from our police counterparts.
Seeing the devastation Hamas brought to the Sderot police station was
heartbreaking, and also enraging.
Israel did not start this war, but
it has every right to defend itself. Hamas must be crushed. And America
must immediately do everything it can to avenge the lives of our
citizens who were murdered.
Building Bridges
One of my top
priorities as a police chief was building bridges with every part of
our community. As Georgia’s first Hispanic elected to statewide office,
that’s still a top priority today.
This week, I spent time with Ser
Familia. This group is doing great work to strengthen Georgia’s
Hispanic community and help those in need.
A Real Honor
Earlier
this year, the Georgia Senate passed a resolution commemorating my
retirement from the military. This week, Senator Larry Walker presented
me with a copy of the resolution.
This is humbling, and a real
honor. It was an honor to serve our country in the Army National Guard,
and I’m looking forward to continuing my service as Insurance & Safety
Fire Commissioner.

Commissioner John King got his start as a beat cop with the Atlanta
Police Department. He worked various assignments, including Red Dog and
Organized Crime, before joining the Doraville Police Department. Before
becoming Chief of Police, he served as a Detective and Deputy Chief.
During his 17 years as Police Chief, Commissioner King tackled
corruption, implemented community policing in at-risk neighborhoods,
and cracked down on gang violence through early intervention programs
at local schools.
In addition to his career in law enforcement,
Commissioner King spent four decades serving in the U.S. Army National
Guard — enlisting as a private and retiring as a major general.
He
deployed to Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan — earning the Bronze Star
Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, El Salvador gold medal for achievement,
meritorious service medals, and a NATO award along the way.
Commissioner King retired from active duty in 2023.
As Georgia’s
Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner, Commissioner King has disrupted
the status quo, put Georgia families first, and held the powerful
accountable. He was appointed by Governor Brian Kemp in 2019 and
elected to a full term in 2022, making him Georgia’s first Hispanic
statewide elected official.
