Last week, I mentioned that I was working diligently to help House Republicans use this opportunity to unite in electing a new, effective, and conservative Speaker so we can get back to doing the work of the People's House.
Here is an update on where things stand today. Over the weekend, I endorsed Jim Jordan for Speaker of the House. I believe we need a leader who will fight for our conservative Texas values, like closing the southern border, eliminating the deficit, and cutting our wasted spending. Jim Jordan is committed to doing that and getting back to work for the American people.
During a closed-door House Republican conference meeting, we heard from both speaker candidates, Jim Jordan and Steve Scalise. After we listened to why they would make a good fit...we voted. I voted for Jim Jordan as Speaker; however, Steve Scalise won the majority of the conference vote (113-99). But yesterday, Steve Scalise dropped out of the speaker race because he didn't believe he could get to 217 votes when we brought the vote to the House floor.
Today, Jim Jordan jumped back into the speaker race, and I will continue to support Jim Jordan during the race. As I've mentioned before....the situation is very fluid and is changing by the day, and sometimes even hours. I believe that the Republican conference needs to come together and unite behind one candidate so we can get back to work. The American people and the world need us to get back to business.
But we have not forgotten that we need to work extremely quickly and make dramatic spending cuts to get our economy back on track and our borders secure. We also need to help our greatest ally - Israel, in their time of need. Americans deserve nothing less. It is an honor to represent each of you in Congress. And I never forget that I work for YOU.
