Did you know that roughly one in five Americans owe medical debt?
This debt primarily comes from hospital visits—and it disproportionately
impacts low-income Americans and people of color.
Like any type of other debt, carrying this burden can have significant
ramifications when it comes to adversely affecting credit scores, which in
turn can prevent someone from acquiring a loan, mortgage, or even an
apartment.
Earlier last month, the Biden Administration announced that it was taking
the first steps toward removing this burden from people’s credit scores,
which could significantly improve ratings for millions.
This announcement comes as Katie has worked tirelessly in Congress to
champion legislation that would ease the burden of medical debt so many
face. And once elected to the U.S. Senate, she will continue to work to
push to ensure that medical debt won’t cause a lifetime of financial harm
and to create a more just and equitable healthcare system.
