A forthcoming publication from the Academy’s bipartisan U.S. Supreme Court Working Group, which is due to be released on October 25th, sets out a possible path toward Supreme Court reform. The Case for Supreme Court Term Limits builds on the Academy’s 2020 landmark report, Our Common Purpose: Reinventing American Democracy for the 21st Century, and examines how 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices could be enacted without the need for a Constitutional amendment.  

In this release event co-hosted by the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the Senate and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, Akhil Amar, Charles Fried and Judge Patti Saris will discuss the new publication, the possibility of establishing Supreme Court term limits, and the role the Senate might play in enacting such a reform.

The Educating for American Democracy (EAD) Implementation Consortium awarded $600,000 to five K–5 pilot projects whose initiatives align with the EAD Roadmap for high-quality K-12 history and civics education. The Our Common Purpose report recommends investing in civics educators and lifelong civics education.  

Yuval Levin argues that ranked-choice voting in primaries could combat current congressional gridlock by drawing into politics candidates inclined to appeal to a broader range of voters and build coalitions.  

Kristen Cambell, CEO of Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement, argues that more investment is needed in civic culture to transcend partisan politics: “Donors, and Americans in general, need to recognize that democracy is larger than politics, and politics is larger than partisanship.” 

Westlake Community Services and Senior Center in Ohio launched a conversation series that uses the Our Common Purpose report as a basis for weekly discussions about democracy and politics.
