Refugee camp in Tunaydbah in Gedaref state, providing lifesaving assistance to the newly displaced

Dear John,

It may only be autumn, but our UNHCR teams are already on the ground in more than eight locations where we believe refugees and displaced families will struggle most this winter.

Displaced Syrians are being pushed further into poverty. We’re providing warm blankets and winter clothes for families, along with vital cash assistance to help people pay for rent, food and fuel.

Elsewhere, over 1 million Sudanese refugees have been forced to flee to Egypt and other neighbouring countries, an area that is seeing more and more extreme weather each winter, with little more than the clothes they wear. Cash assistance will help them stay warm and pay for food, accommodation and clothing.

In Ukraine, bombed out buildings have left families cold and vulnerable. Our teams are not only providing urgent supplies such as blankets and solar lights, but are also providing repairs to help people stay in their homes and communities and to face the harsh winter.

Afghanistan is currently facing the consequences of the deadliest earthquake in two decades. The scale of the damage is extensive with many villages destroyed which leaves many Afghan families vulnerable in the upcoming winter season. We're tirelessly working to provide emergency supplies, tents and cash assistance to help Afghani families rebuild their lives and keep warm in the upcoming winter.

Last winter was catastrophic for thousands of refugees and displaced families. This year – as the climate crisis causes more extreme and unpredictable weather – could be even worse. We need to act quickly to keep refugees and displaced families warm this winter.

Did you know that regular, monthly support could ensure we reach the most vulnerable people before the depths of winter? If you would like to make a monthly gift, and help us provide year-round protection, then you can sign up online here.

Thank you,
