Legislative Update

*Proposed Social Studies Standards*

With the official notice to adopt rules I am inviting all concerned parents and educators to submit comments during the open period that runs until 4:30 pm on October 25th. Comments can be submitted at the Office of Administrative Hearings website here [ [link removed] ]. Following the comment period two public hearings will be held over video conferencing that the public can log into on November 8th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and November 9th from 1 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.

Social Studies is an important portion of our student?s curriculum. These proposed changes add abhorrent language that is intended to separate students into collectives based on inalienable characteristics. While we have some dark stains on our nation's history we should always teach our students to strive to create ?a more perfect union? and that goal is only accomplished when we all work together as Americans.

This round of rulemaking comes as a product of the 2023 Education Omnibus bill (HF2497 [ [link removed] ]) which includes in sections 13 and 14 a requirement for an ethnic studies credit beginning in the 2026-27 school year. There is plenty of time for the Department of Education to get this right without creating divisive language in the curriculum. They need to listen to the concerns of parents on teachers or this requirement needs to be removed from statute.

At the conclusion of the public comment period and hearings, there will be a ruling on whether the proposed changes get implemented or if they should be amended which then restarts the process of a public comment period for any rules changes. It is also possible that after the public hearings, there is a recommendation of no changes and the rulemaking process would end.

*SRO Listening Session*

This week House and Senate Republicans hosted a listening session with officers, teachers, and school administrators to hear directly from those affected by this change to share their concerns and possible solutions to get our Resource Officers back in schools across Minnesota.

Several knowledgeable voices shared their unique perspectives on the important role SROs play in our education system. I hope conversations like this will finally convince the governor to call a special session to address this issue. You can view the entire listening session here:
