** Response to Bahrain’s High-Level Statement at the 43rd Session of the UN Human Rights Council

Concerns Over Bahrain’s Manipulation of Facts to Conceal Human Rights Abuses Amid Deterioration
Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB), following the statement made on Wednesday 26 February during the High-Level Segment of the Human Rights Council by Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif Bin Rashid AlZayani, is concerned with Bahrain’s continued lack of genuine commitment for promoting and protecting international human rights. Mr AlZayani took the opportunity during his statement to highlight Bahrain’s commitment to progressing human rights but his statement was plagued with blatant mistruths that serve to perpetuate a narrative based on deceit and neglected to address the ongoing and systematic human rights violations in the country.

** Yusuf Husain Yusuf Ahmed Mohammed Ali

Yusuf Husain Yusuf Ahmed Mohammed Ali was subjected to torture during interrogation before being arbitrarily detained in Bahrain’s Jau prison.
On 15 September 2017, the 24-year-old engineering student turned himself in at the Roundabout 17 Police Station in Hamad Town on condition that his cousin be released from custody. Yusuf’s cousin was previously arrested when their vehicle was attacked by armed forces in civilian clothes. Authorities charged Yusuf with rioting, illegal assembly, endangering people’s lives or safety, arson, intentionally endangering private transportation, the use of fireworks to endanger the belongings of others and importing, manufacturing and possessing usable explosives or weapons.

At HRC43, the High Commissioner’s Call was supported for Independent Investigations into Violations of International Humanitarian Law & War Crimes Occurring in Yemen
------------------------------------------------------------
Today, an oral intervention was delivered at the 43rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, under Item 2 regarding oral updates by the High Commissioner on activities in Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras, Cyprus, the Islamic Republic of Iran and Sri Lanka, Eritrea, Nicaragua, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and Yemen. The intervention focused on the importance of cooperation between the de-facto authority in Sanaa and UN agencies to alleviate the suffering faced by millions in Yemen.

Today, Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB) delivered an oral intervention at the 43rd Session of the Human Rights Council during the General Debate under Item 2. ADHRB called on the Council to apply pressure on Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain as states participating in the war on Yemen, to implement the terms of the Stockholm Agreement, and bring about an end to this war.

Today, an oral intervention was delivered at the 43rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, under Item 3’s Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on Torture. The intervention focused on the arrest and detention of Bahraini activists who have been detained and tortured for their engagement with the Human Rights Council.

Americans for Democracy & Human Rights in Bahrain (ADHRB) welcomes this opportunity at the 43^d session of the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council (HRC) to draw attention to the ongoing imprisonment of women’s rights activists in Saudi Arabia. Since 2018 in particular, the kingdom has targeted prominent female human rights defenders with arrest and ill-treatment, and several still remain detained.
