Hey John,
The coronavirus is believed to have started in Wuhan, China and has since spread all across the world. Along with it spreads xenophobia that ranges from racial slurs to outright assault towards those who are Asian in public. Our community member Rocky will talk about the coronavirus and how it ties to historical exoticization and xenophobia towards people of Chinese/Asian descent in Western media. We will also learn how we can tie the spread of coronavirus to ending animal agriculture, while being a better ally towards Asian folks. Come learn about this important topic at the Meetup: Coronavirus and the Spread of Xenophobia, taking place at the Berkeley Animal Rights Center on Saturday at 11AM.
If you're interested in getting more involved in this active community, apply to become a chapter member at dxe.io/apply.
Here are the other events we have happening this week (all taking place at the Berkeley Animal Rights Center, 2425 Channing Way, unless otherwise noted). Action events are highlighted in blue and community events are highlighted in orange -- both are crucial to our movement!
- Friday, March 6th, 5 PM: DxE vs. Big Ag Projection at Oakland First Fridays - On December 31st, Direct Action Everywhere (DxE) released the powerful and visionary video of challenging Animal Ag and risking everything to win #RightToRescue. We will go to Oakland to outreach and inspire folks to make that vision a reality in 2020! People of ALL different comfort levels are welcome to outreach or support —if you want to see every animal live happy, safe and free, we want you to stand with us! We will project a large image of DxE vs Big Ag video on a blank wall along with audio for folks passerby to watch and listen. We will talk to those who stop and provide information as well as opportunities for them to get involved in the animal rights movement. We will meet at Valley St & W Grand Ave, Oakland, CA.
- Saturday, March 7th , 1 PM: March Vegan Popup - We are happy to announce and host our monthly vegan pop up where all our Bay Area local vendors come together to provide excellent vegan food and community! Please bring your own cup, plate, fork, etc. Plates and utensils will be provided but we strongly encourage everyone to bring their own to reduce needless waste. Vendors include (but not limited to) Vegan Alien, Deliciously Vegan SF, The Cosmic Heart Center, Black Moon Confections, Live Vibrant Juice Co, Hella Nuts, Elevating Edibles, Concha Libre, Ether's Vegan, Genki Vegan Dim Sum, Animal Liberation Creation, and Love Meets Tea.
- Saturday, March 7th, 2pm: Chickens and Pancakes Volunteer Microsanctuary Work Day - Help keep our rescued hens safe and happy by fueling yourself with vegan pancakes and improving their living setup. This is a great event if you want to meet rescued animals and learn what it takes to care for them. Just being present, normalizing compassion towards chickens, and socializing the hens is a huge help! Additionally, we will build play structures, give health checks, and take chicken selfies with our beautiful hens, Donatello, Michaelangelo, and Raphael (the teenage mutant ninja chickens). We're conveniently located in Berkeley, CA, near the corner of Dwight and Sacramento with loads of street parking at 1515 Dwight Way, Berkeley, CA.
- Saturday, March 7th, 5 PM: Joker Screening + ALC Click Party - Every year, the Animal Liberation Conference takes over Berkeley as over one thousand activists come together for a week of collective action. We need your help making 2020 our biggest conference to date. Bring your phone or laptop to invite your friends to the conference as we share yummy vegan snacks and watch a movie! Check the discussion of this event page to vote on which movie we should watch!
