New A.I. Tool Diagnoses Brain Tumors on the Operating Table- The New York Times

A new study describes a method for faster and more precise diagnoses, which can help surgeons decide how aggressively to operate.

Once their scalpels reach the edge of a brain tumor, surgeons are faced with an agonizing decision: cut away some healthy brain tissue to ensure the entire tumor is removed, or give the healthy tissue a wide berth and risk leaving some of the menacing cells behind.

Now scientists in the Netherlands report using artificial intelligence to arm surgeons with knowledge about the tumor that may help them make that choice.

"Long colds" can be a thing in the same way that "long Covid" is, with some people experiencing prolonged symptoms after an initial infection, according to a UK study.

More work is needed to understand who is at risk, how bad it can be and what can be done about it, experts say.

The idea that a respiratory virus - or indeed other viral infections - can cause longer-lasting illness is not new, but the recent Covid pandemic has brought fresh attention to the phenomenon.

NASA Reveals First Pictures of Osiris-Rex Asteroid Samples- The New York Times

Scientists said they got more material than expected from the Osiris-Rex mission during its seven-year journey to the asteroid Bennu.

A first glimpse of the jackpot from a seven-year mission to bring back bits of an asteroid was unveiled on Wednesday.

NASA officials in Houston displayed images of salt-and-pepper chunks of rock and particles of dark space dust that were brought back to Earth from the asteroid, Bennu, and described initial scientific observations about the material. The mission, Osiris-Rex, concluded in September when a capsule containing the collection of asteroid samples re-entered through the Earth’s atmosphere and was recovered in the Utah desert.

Research: How Successful Health Care Organizations Keep Worker Morale Up - Harvard Business Review

There are signs that some U.S. health care organizations are scoring some successes in addressing the worker morale and retention crisis. But data from Press Ganey surveys shows that there is a widening gap between the most- and least-successful organizations. This article draws lessons from the former. It discusses three key elements needed to engage workers, make them more resilient, and make them feel more aligned with their leaders.

The workforce burnout and retention crisis has been dominating health care for the last three years, but data (finally) shows some encouraging trends. Analyses of survey responses from the last three years show that the decline in workforce “engagement” has flattened out and “resilience” is actually improving. The data also shows a spreading of the pack — with bigger variation between organizations where workforce morale and retention is improving versus others where the slide continues. This article will capture some of the best practices that have the potential to turn a vicious cycle into a virtuous one.

The following analyses are based on about 1.6 million survey responses from employees of U.S. health care organizations (including over 121,500 physicians) during 2020, 2021, and 2022 conducted by our company, Press Ganey. While burnout has been worsening for all types of health care professionals, three additional metrics provide a more complete picture of what is happening in health care:
