When I read headline after headline that says “Congress” is dysfunctional, I want to tear my hair out.
And I want to grab a red pen, cross out “Congress,” and replace it with “The GOP-controlled House of Representatives.” Because that’s where the chaos is coming from.
The way I see it, Congress as a whole is not dysfunctional. The problem is we have a handful of Trump loyalists that are determined to burn this place down, and a Republican Party that is enabling them.
When Democrats had the House, Senate, and White House in the first two years of President Joe Biden’s term, we got things done. We passed a huge infrastructure bill that's paying off around the country as we speak. We passed the biggest climate package in the history of the world. We put in a 15% minimum corporate tax. We passed a $35 cap on insulin for seniors. The Biden-Harris administration has now delivered $127 billion in student debt relief — and is continuing to cancel debt for more and more borrowers.
What have the Republicans done since taking the House? 1. They nearly defaulted on the national debt. 2. They nearly shut down the government. And 3. For the first time in history they deposed their own Speaker. Those are their three big accomplishments. Great job.
What is the function of government, other than trying to make life better for people, to expand opportunity, and try to deal with the real problems that families have? That’s what Democrats are doing.
Meanwhile, Republicans are hijacking our government, damaging our democracy in order to hurt more people and grab more power for themselves, and trying to make us so frustrated that we just tune out. But there’s no way I’m going to give them that satisfaction. And I hope you won't either.
I’m going to keep doing everything in my power to stand up to these extremists and fight for the bold, systemic change we need to protect our democracy and our values. If you’re able to, please pitch in $28 or anything you can to our re-election campaign to help continue this fight.
