The presiding judge in the federal government's case against Hunter Biden has agreed to dismiss a serious charge to move forward with a deal reached by the embattled first son and prosecutors last week.
U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika, on Wednesday, approved the dropping of a gun charge related to false statements made by Hunter in 2018 regarding his drug use. Hunter will now face a three-count indictment for wrongful gun possession and lying on official application forms, while charges related to filing false tax returns are still pending.
Hunter, who detailed his struggles with a crack cocaine addiction in his memoir, purchased a revolver in 2018 and kept it for 11 days before disposing of it.
Earlier this summer, Hunter's legal situation took an unexpected turn when a plea deal fell through under scrutiny. A judge questioned why Hunter would be allowed to avoid gun charges by pleading guilty to lying about his income. Prosecutors claimed gun charges were still on the table, a point disputed by Hunter's lawyers in court.
By continuing to plead not guilty to the other charges, Hunter threatens to take his case to trial, coinciding with President Joe Biden's ongoing campaign struggles. Biden, already facing public and party dissatisfaction, will have to address questions about his involvement in Hunter's business activities. A key associate of the Biden family previously testified that he witnessed Biden participating in numerous business meetings that raised concerns about whether the then-vice president used his influence to benefit Hunter and other family members improperly.
House Republicans have continued to scrutinize President Biden's connection to Hunter, with former Speaker Kevin McCarthy launching an impeachment inquiry before his removal. The inquiry aimed to investigate whether the president offered "things of value" to foreign businessmen connected to adversarial governments, such as the Chinese communist party. President Biden has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, a sentiment echoed by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. Upon news of the impeachment inquiry, the administration sent a memo to numerous mainstream news organizations, urging them to report on the "lies" they claim Republicans are spreading about the president.
