Hello everyone,
I'm moving money to RG this year, and you should too!
My access to wealth comes from my dad's side, accumulated by a family real estate business in New York City. It was just ten years ago that my dad actually inherited a substantial sum of money (approaching $100 million, but it's hard to nail down) from the family assets. My first access came in the form of the interest in a trust with a roughly $850,000 principal, which I won't control until I'm 40 (9 years to go!). At around this time, I found a pamphlet about Resource Generation, made a call to an organizer, and went to my first Making Money Make Change. It was beyond relieving to find out I wasn't the only person struggling with the contradiction between my values and my material reality as an owning class person, and there were many examples to learn from. Since beginning to receive that interest some years ago, I have committed to giving the entirety of that amount to movements, campaigns, and individuals mostly in my community of Detroit and Highland Park.
Last year, my great aunt Adele passed away. It took the better part of twelve months for the estate to be sorted out. When all was said and done, my siblings and I each received just shy of $850,000 - in cash. It arrived in my bank account two weeks ago. It's the most money I've ever had legal control of, and it's intense. Thankfully, I had a set of deep relationships in my community and the better part of a decade of time spent with people from the RG community to support me. In the week since the wire transfer cleared, I have moved about $150,000 in individual and organizational gifts and made plans for another $500,000 in movement giving and interpersonal support. The ease with which I made those decisions and took the steps to enact them is in no small part thanks to Resource Generation and its extended community.
I don't spend much time in RG spaces these days. I work full-time on energy justice and democracy issues, make my continuing contributions, take care of my home, hang out with my partner, and play a lot of dungeons and dragons. There isn't that much time to stay super engaged. But I know that RG is continuing to develop and organize young people to move their money, build a political analysis, and have the courage to publicly be a rich kid in solidarity with the very people the accumulation of wealth in this country has dispossessed. So upon receiving this money, I committed $50,000 to RG's membership drive and moved it within that first week.
It should be said: I've been an RG member long enough to have opinions. I don’t like every choice the organization makes, and don't always agree with the tactics and strategy. But that's the case for almost every organization I've funded or participated in. I give to RG because none of us alone have enough money to outspend the capitalist vultures determined to pick every bit of flesh from the bones of our communities. Even all together, it will take much more than money to hold our own. I give to RG because I know that those dollars are multiplying into movements, and giving us a fighting chance to win the world I want to live in.
As someone who's been in leadership of movement organizations, one thing I can say for sure is that it's messy. There are no "right" choices, only what you think is the best course available in an uncertain and unjust world. And whatever my critiques, I see RG continually producing new leaders committed to resourcing the messy process of building a better world from the fractured parts of this one, whether I'm in the middle of it or not.
I hope you'll join me in keeping that messy and essential work going.
