In four states, sales fell by up to 19% for all cigars

Success of local flavored cigar sales restrictions underscores need for national regulations
Flavored cigar sales restrictions in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, and New York significantly reduced cigar sales, according to new Truth Initiative® research published in Nicotine & Tobacco Research. In these four states, sales fell by up to 19% for all cigars and up to 41% for little cigars, which are especially popular with youth. The study provides further support for the FDA’s 2022 proposed rule to prohibit characterizing flavors in all cigars, which has not yet been finalized.

Smoking and health care costs: how soon after quitting do companies see savings?
While an individual will likely feel the health benefits of quitting tobacco within weeks or months, it actually takes a little longer to affect health care costs. After someone quits, an analysis in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found, the savings in health care costs start to show after 18 months. At a year and a half post-quit, continuous sustained quitters had $541 less in healthcare costs EACH QUARTER than continuing smokers. That translates to more than $2000 per year per quitter in health care costs saved! In short, there are both immediate effects and longer-term benefits that are good for your bottom line when your employees quit tobacco.

This week in tobacco policy news
Honolulu, Hawaii – The city council passed a bill which would prohibit the sale of flavored tobacco products, except hookah, premium cigars, and loose leaf tobacco, in the city and county of Honolulu if and when a state law the preempts localities from regulating or restricting the sale and use of tobacco products is overturned or suspended. The bill now moves to the mayor’s desk for consideration.

California – Gov. Newsom signed into law a bill which authorizes the California Department of Health and the Attorney General to better enforce the state’s flavored tobacco law. The law will take effect January 2024.
