We are confronting one of the most pressing issues of our time friend, Right now, we are dealing with some of the most pressing challenges of our time. Hate crimes have been used to terrorize marginalized communities since our nation’s founding. Recent reports show they are increasing dramatically. Because of your dedication to our mission, the SPLC is equipped to fight back against these hate-fueled attacks. But there is still more work to be done: According to a study reported by USA TODAY, the rate of hate crimes surged by 10% from 2021 to 2022 in 42 major U.S. cities. Many of the brutal hate crimes and racist terror attacks seen on the news are not random acts but are rather fueled by white supremacist ideologies. We are prepared to take on the challenge, but we cannot do it without your support. While hate crime reporting has improved, it is still deeply flawed. The FBI started requiring every agency to report all crimes, including hate crimes, in 2021 through its National Incident Based-Reporting System. Still, many agencies were unable or unwilling to report through the system, resulting in the participation of 3,300 fewer agencies than in the previous year. To make matters worse, states have varying definitions of what constitutes a hate crime, while four states have no hate crime statutes at all, causing more confusion about what gets reported. This sets a dangerous precedent, preventing our ability to address the full scope of the problem. We must be equipped with accurate data to better advocate for survivors of hate crimes, demand federal protections and enforcement, and fund prevention programs across the country. At the SPLC, we’ve led efforts to curb hate crimes by tracking and exposing hate groups, taking legal action against them and providing educators and communities with valuable resources that work to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the classroom and beyond through our Learning for Justice program. Your support is critical to fuel the work we do to combat hate in our country. Will you make a contribution today to help us win the fight against the rising tide of hate and bigotry in our country? Sincerely, Your friends at the Southern Poverty Law Center
